The Santa Clarita Public Library has announced this year’s One Story One City selection: “The Music Shop” by Rachel Joyce. Set in 1988, the novel follows a record shop owner with a rare gift for matching customers to the music they need most. When a new customer enters his life, he must confront the parts of his past he has kept at a distance. The story explores connection, vulnerability and the role music plays in shaping who we are. The Santa Clarita Public Library recommends the title for adults due to mature topics.
Throughout March, the Santa Clarita Public Library will host events inspired by the book’s themes of music and community. The month begins with The Music Shop: A Literary Listening Experience at The MAIN (24266 Main St.) on Friday, March 6, from 7-8:30 p.m., featuring a musical review with the Santa Clarita Symphony Orchestra.
Adults can also attend Books and Brews at Lucky Luke Brewing (25108 Rye Canyon Loop) on Wednesday, March 18, from 7-8 p.m. for a relaxed gathering that offers readers the chance to enjoy a drink while engaging in thoughtful conversation about the book’s themes and characters. Registration is required, and participants can expect a welcoming, casual atmosphere where ideas are shared freely and connections are made naturally.
Community participation continues with The Right Note: A Community Drum Circle at the Old Town Newhall Library Branch (24500 Main St.) on Saturday, March 28, from 4-5 p.m., inviting participants of all skill levels to gather, pick up a drum and create rhythm together.
The month concludes with Acoustic Therapy at the Valencia Library Branch (23743 Valencia Blvd.) on Sunday, March 29, from 2:30-4 p.m., a calming and restorative opportunity centered on wellness and reflection through a sound bath experience.
In addition to these featured programs, the Santa Clarita Public Library will offer themed craft activities throughout March, including Bebop Clocks, Paper Notes, B-Side Shrinky Dinks, Mixed Tape Platters and Licorice Pizza Book Ends.
Copies of “The Music Shop” are available at all Santa Clarita Public Library Branches in print and digital formats. For a full schedule of events and program details, visit City.sc/OSOC.
