LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The No. 9-ranked University of Antelope Valley Pioneers (9-3) were bested on Wednesday morning, falling 95-84 to the undefeated, No. 11-ranked Warriors of Sterling College (15-0) in intercollegiate non-conference NAIA women’s basketball action in Las Vegas, Nev.
As part of the Las Vegas Hoopla Tournament, UAV and Sterling remained even during most of the game. The Pioneers led by as many as five points two different times in the opening half of play, but would trail at the intermission by one, 39-38.
UAV would not regain the lead after halftime, falling behind by as many as 11, and despite pulling within five points late in the contest, would fall to the Warriors who stayed undefeated on the season, 95-84.
Junior forward Tylen Price (Lancaster, CA) led all Pioneers with 19 points and was a perfect 7-of-7 shooting free throws and senior guard Alyssa Gonzales (Bakersfield, CA) scored a career-high 16 points to go along with four assists, two rebounds and two steals.
Senior guard Samantha Earl (Clovis, CA), senior guard Iliana Blanc (Los Angeles, CA) and sophomore forward Alexia Budd (Los Angeles, CA) each contributed 12 points, with Budd also grabbing a game-high nine boards.
UAV hit 32-of-66 field goals (.485), 6-of-21 three-pointers (.286), 14-of-18 free throws (.778), and were outrebounded by the Warriors, 31-25. UAV committed 13 turnovers and stole the ball 12 times. Sterling made 25-of-43 shots (.581), 9-of-14 three-pointers (.643) and 36-of-47 free throws (.766) and committed 18 turnovers and stole the ball from UAV four times.
NEXT GAME: Coached by Deon Price, the Pioneers remain on the road to face Vanguard University for a non-conference NAIA contest on Friday, Dec. 21 at 1 p.m. PST in Costa Mesa. The Pioneers were defeated by the Lions earlier this season, losing on Nov. 27, 82-71.
