Scott Wilk far outdistanced his opponents for Assembly while Bob Kellar and TimBen Boydston finished well ahead of their three challengers for City Council in a nonpartisan straw poll conducted over the weekend by Santa Clarita Valley Republican Assembly.

The elder of the two chartered Republican Assembly volunteer groups in the SCV conducted the poll Thursday through Sunday at three locations across the valley: the Newhall Farmers Market (Thursday), the Westfield Valencia Town Center mall parking lot (Friday and Sunday) and Route 66 Classic Grill in Canyon Country (Saturday).

“While not intended to be scientific, there were more than 400 residents who participated in the event to help raise awareness of the election and increase actual voter turnout at the polls,” according to a statement from the organization.

Three months before the electorate casts ballots for Assembly, Republican Scott Wilk garnered 266 straw votes versus 57 for Democrat Edward Headington, 21 for Republican Paul Strickland and 5 for Republican Patricia McKeon.

“My message of holding the line on taxes and reforming regulations, re-prioritizing government spending and improving our public education system is resonating with voters,” Wilk said in a statement after the results were announced.

While Santa Clarita residents make up only a portion of the 38th Assembly District – voters in the San Fernando and Simi valleys weren’t polled – only Santa Clarita residents are eligible to vote for City Council on April 10.

A month before the election, straw voters in Santa Clarita favored Bob Kellar and challenger TimBen Boydston over incumbent Laurie Ender and challengers Jon Hatami and Ed Colley.

Straw voters were allowed to pick two for City Council, just like in the real election. The breakdown was as follows: Kellar 311, Boydston 297, Ender 72, Hatami 69 and Colley 13.
