The chief suspect in the “hot prowl” burglary in Westridge that was reported in Monday night’s news has been arrested.
A Santa Clarita resident saw the news coverage and idenified the suspect as Karen Kapshanyan, a 24-year-old man from Van Nuys.
The burglary occurred Jan. 3 at about 3:15 p.m. The Westridge resident whose purse was stolen managed to take a picture of one of the two suspects with her cell phone.
An unidentified SCV resident recognized the suspect from the photo and contacted the lead detective, Deputy Chuck Christensen of the SCV Sheriff’s Station, who confirmed the suspect’s identity.
Surveillance teams from the SCV Station, along with detectives from the sheriff’s Major Crimes Bureau, observed Kapshanyan’s Van Nuys home while Christensen wrote out a search warrant.
SCV deputies executed the warrant Tuesday at about 9 p.m. and took Kapshanyan into custody.
The suspect was booked on suspicion of residential burlgary and is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in San Fernando.
“Santa Clarita Station would like to thank the citizens for their calls that led to the arrest of Suspect Kapshanyan,” Sgt. James Anderson said in a statement.
Hot prowl burglaries are considered especially dangerous because they involve the offender entering a home when the occupant is present.
