1943 - Actor William S. Hart announces intent to bequeath Newhall estate to the public [story]

sentinelchickens[Vector Control] – Despite cooling temperatures, West Nile virus is still active.

Recently, the Scientific-Technical Services department reported the sentinel chicken flocks in the Rowland Heights, Whittier Narrows and Santa Clarita areas show signs of virus transmission.

Chickens bitten by an infected mosquito will not show the same symptoms that are observed in other birds such as corvids. However, they will produce antibodies, which indicate virus activity in the area. The District would like to remind you to continue making your homes safe from mosquitoes by dumping and draining standing water. An Improved Tool to Fight Mosquitoes Underground

For the Underground Storm Drain team, controlling mosquitoes in places that are not easily accessible requires the right tools to get the job done.

When GLACVCD recently acquired a stock Ford F-250 truck, the Facilities and Operations departments knew it needed improvements to meet the demands of current vector control strategies.

“While it was a collaborative effort, much of the kudos goes to our vector control specialist, Tom Veloz,” said Kevin Vargas, Operations supervisor who oversees the Underground Storm Drain team. “Primarily using resources at the District, Tom improved a vehicle that allows us to protect the public effectively.”

Using in-house talent, the truck was quickly retrofitted with a new exterior that replaced the wooden truck bed and side panels. Tom mounted ergonomically-enhanced equipment storage units, which allowed for quick removal of heavy-duty tools. Extra hazard and warning lights were installed above the bed and along the sides to improve safety for the staff as well as oncoming traffic.

The Underground Storm Drain team will operate the renovated vehicle to improve efficiency in covering 9,000 miles of underground tubes and conduits beneath L.A. County that are potential breeding sources for mosquitoes. For more information about our Underground Crew in Operations click HERE.
