For the second time in as many years, College of the Canyons has partnered with the City of Santa Clarita, the Santa Clarita Economic Development Corporation and the William S. Hart Union High School District to host a two-day lineup of events associated with National Manufacturing Day, set to take place on Friday, Oct. 2.
National Manufacturing Day is a day dedicated to highlighting the growing American manufacturing industry while providing insights into the unique and lucrative career paths and job opportunities available to students who are willing to pursue them.
An estimated 80 percent of manufacturers cannot find employees with the skills required for work in manufacturing industries.
Through the efforts of Manufacturing Day, manufacturing related businesses, companies and educators will look to change the public perception that jobs in manufacturing are undesirable because of low pay or working conditions —while reinforcing the fact that such jobs are often highly technical and well-paying with additional employee benefits.
This year’s Manufacturing Day festivities will include more than 2,100 events taking place across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
College of the Canyons will host events over a two-day period while bringing together students and manufacturing companies to showcase the possibilities a career in manufacturing can lead to.
On Thursday, Oct. 1, leaders from regional manufacturing companies in industries ranging from aerospace, biomedical devices and automobile production, will share their view of today’s manufacturing world and discuss the skills students need to succeed in those occupational fields during a presentation aimed at high school and college aged students.
The event will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center (PAC), located at the college’s Valencia campus. This event is free and open to the public, however pre-registration is required.
On Friday, Oct. 2, COC officials will invite a group of more than 180 local high school students to the Valencia campus to hear a presentation from Jeremy Bout, nationally recognized manufacturing speaker and producer/host of the television program Edge Factor, to learn more about careers in manufacturing.
After that, the group will venture out into the community to tour the local facilities of some of the region’s most prominent manufacturing companies including: Advanced Bionics (biomedical), Aerospace Dynamics International (aerospace), B&B Manufacturing (aerospace), Boston Scientific Neuromodulation (biomedical), Donaldson Filtration Solutions (aerospace), RAH Industries (aerospace), Remo Drums (musical instruments and Stratasys Direct (3D printing).
