The College of the Canyons music department, in conjunction with Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico en Los Angeles (UNAM-LA), will present “Electronica Musique & Multi-Media,” a student and alumni-produced electronic music concert.

The concert will be held at UNAM-LA’s Downtown LA location on Friday, Oct. 21, from 6:15 to 8:30 p.m. UNAM-LA is located at 634 S. Spring St. in Los Angeles.

“The entire concert has been designed to leave listeners with a sense of wonder and a new appreciation for this timeless medium,” said Dr. Bernardo Feldman, chair of the college’s music department and guest lecturer at UNAM’s Music School. “Musical expectations will be expanded and challenged at the same time.”

Performing under the direction of Dr. Feldman, eight COC students and alumni will present their work in front of a live audience, while showcasing a creative, and at times, hypnotic style of electronic music.

Each cutting-edge musical piece will be accompanied by a multimedia performance or original piece of art, with several musicians choosing to incorporate illustrations, dance and other forms of performance art into their set.

“Students are capable of producing music of exquisite beauty and boundless energy, which is also intellectually challenging,” added Feldman. “Because our students are so versatile, their participation might include a singer whose voice is manipulated live so that it is harmonized with itself or it creates an imitative tapestry of echoes.”

Members of the COC Dance Department, under the guidance of professor Phylise Smith, will contribute dance, movement and improvisation to the performance.

The event will begin with an illustrated lecture where flutist Salpi Kerkonian will perform Feldman’s “Onirica” (From the “Realm of Dreams”), an intriguing sonic landscape for electronically processed flute and manipulated voice.

The students and alumni chosen to perform were selected from the COC music courses “Music 142: Electronic Music Composition” and “Music 146: Electronic Music for the Stage.”

Attendees are asked to arrive in advance of the pre-concert’s talk at 5:30 p.m., which will provide an illustrated overview of electronic music featuring experimental music from the early pioneers of the 20th century to the innovators of today.

The lecture and concert are free and open to the public.

Founded in March 2005, the Los Angeles chapter of UNAM, which is the largest university in Latin America, works to foster the exchange of culture, science and education between Mexico and the United States.
