College of the Canyons took a 3-0 first inning lead vs. Glendale College but allowed the Vaqueros to battle back, falling 7-4 to set up a three-way tie atop the Western State Conference (WSC), East Division standings.
Canyons (11-9, 4-1) entered the game unbeaten in conference play and ended the weekend tied with Glendale (18-5, 4-1) and Citrus College (12-9-1, 4-1) in the WSC, East.
COC was able to push across three runs in the first on a two-out rally sparked by Anthony Lepre’s single through the right side and Calvin Estrada’s double to right field. Glendale shortstop Grant Mona helped extend the inning further with a ground ball error and throwing miscue that allowed Lepre and Estrada to score. Kris Keach doubled to left field in the next sequence to plate Chris May and give Canyons a 3-0 lead.
Estrada, May and Keach all finished the day with two hits.
Glendale responded with a two-run home run off the bat of third baseman Frank Garriola that cut into the COC advantage. The Vaqueros came away with three more runs in the fifth inning to chase COC starting pitcher Chase Wheatcroft.
Wheatcroft (5-1) was hit for six runs in five innings for the loss, his first of the season. COC relievers Jarret Poh and Connor Dreyer both pitched two innings.
The Cougars added another run in the seventh when Lepre grounded out to score Cole Kleszcz and bring it to the 7-4 final score.
Canyons will next host Victor Valley College at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 21.
