One 19-year-old man sustained life-threatening injuries and his male passenger, also 19, was ejected and killed in a single-vehicle collision Tuesday night on Sand Canyon Road.
The victim was identified Wednesday as Dakota John Demott, a graduate of Canyon High School.
The crash occurred at 10:54 p.m. when the driver – whose name has not been released – failed to negotiate a slight curve on Sand Canyon and lost control of his Ford Mustang.
He crossed the opposing traffic lane at Alamo Canyon Road and collided with a large oak tree on the opposite shoulder. Demott was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead by Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics.
According to Sgt. Mike Konecny of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, “witnesses saw the vehicle driving southbound on Sand Canyon at extremely high speeds just moments prior to the collision.”
The driver was transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in critical condition. Wednesday morning, a deputy said his chance of survival was “not looking good.”
Anyone with information is asked to call Traffic Investigator Mike Shapiro at 661-255-1121, ext 5111.

Sigh….when will parents learn NOT to give in to their kids requests for a performance car as their first vehicle? No way of knowing for sure if that was the case here, but it is all too familiar of a situation. If you give a kid a fast car, they WILL explore how fast it will go, leading to scenarios like this one. Sad…
WHY NOT JUST PUT SPEED BUMPS on Sand Canyon??????? THAT WOULD SLOW EM DOWN
