A 3-year-old Canyon Country girl died at a hospital Friday night after nearly drowning in a swimming pool earlier in the evening.

The incident occurred about 7:30 p.m. in the 29000 block of Dune Lane, which is off of Oak Springs Canyon Road, just east of Sand Canyon.

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s deputies and Fire Department personnel responded to a 911 call and airlifted the child from Canyon Country Park to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, where she was initially listed in critical condition.

She subsequently died at the hospital at 10:40 p.m., according to the county coroner’s office.

Coroner officials identified the child Sunday as Malek Osman. The official cause of death was drowning.

A person who provided her own name to SCVNews.com, believed to be a female minor, claimed Saturday that she had been playing volleyball with the toddler and other children in the pool. The person indicated a number of people were detained by sheriff’s deputies.

Lt. Bill Weiss of the SCV Sheriff’s Station said no arrests were made; rather, several people, including the parents, were questioned about the course of events. Weiss said the death was ruled accidental.

Prior to the arrival of emergency personnel, Shannon Dave, a licensed vocational nurse who happened to be in the neighborhood at the time, tried to save the child by performing CPR.

“I was waiting for my daughter when a neighbor ran by and said someone was drowning in the pool,” Dave told SCVNews.com. “I immediately ran to the pool, which wasn’t far away, and saw the lifeless body of a small child lying on the concrete next to the pool.

“I immediately kneeled down and started CPR,” she said. “Another person knelt down and started compressions while I performed mouth to mouth resuscitation. The child took a couple of breaths but still remained unresponsive. We continued doing CPR until paramedics arrived. They took over CPR and transported the child to the life flight rescue helicopter awaiting their arrival at Canyon Country Park.

“I just hope that everyone’s efforts aided in the care of her precious little life,” Dave said.

Valencia resident Ali El-Arabi contacted SCVNews.com on Sunday and identified himself as the little girl’s cousin.

“She is and always will be my angel,” El-Arabi said.

He said the girl is survived by her parents and two brothers.
