You never know how you’re going to light the fire of a life-long learner. But you do know that you need to get them close to a flame. That flame can exist in a classroom, a book, a piece of music or a unique experience. It certainly blazes brightly on a stage with an artist performing.
After deliberating over nine applications, Assistance League Santa Clarita is excited to announce that we have awarded arts grants to the following schools: Sulphur Springs, Mint Canyon and Mitchell Community Schools. We have worked with the Education Specialist for the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center and the Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services, Kathy Harris, of the Sulphur Springs Union School District to provide an assembly entitled “Powerhouse – Dance Percussion,” which features three dancers who share the history and music of clogging, tap and Irish dance.
Gayle Abril-Nolet, Vice-President of philanthropic programs for Assistance League says, “We wanted to enhance the partnership between the district and the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center. It was important for us to engage local artists and give the students exposure to an art form that they would not otherwise be able to enjoy. Assistance League Santa Clarita has had a long-standing relationship with the schools through our Operation School Bell® program (which provides new school clothes and shoes to students in need). We wanted to give the entire school community this unique experience.”
Roni Andrus, Principal at Mint Canyon School was exceedingly appreciative of the grant for her school. She remarked, “Virtually none of our students has ever been exposed to anything like the dance performance that is being offered. Studies show that children benefit from Fine Arts instruction in seven main areas; by demonstrating higher academic achievement, confidence and self-presentation skills, perseverance, empathy, compassion, a medium for self expression and problem solving. With these seven areas in mind, ALL of our TK-6 grade students will greatly benefit. Thank you for this wonderful gift to our school.”
