Jerry Powers
Stanislaus County’s chief probation officer could take over the much larger Los Angeles County probation system if supervisors vote to give him the job Tuesday.
County Chief Executive William Fujioka is recommending that the board hire Jerry E. Powers at an annual salary of $255,000 plus up to $25,000 in moving expenses to relocate his family. The plan calls for Powers to start Dec. 5.
Powers would replace Donald H. Blevins, who took over as the county’s top probation officer in April 2010 and quit for personal reasons this month rather than deal with Gov. Jerry Brown’s “realignment” of state prison operations. The shift is expected to add 4,000 state parolees to Los Angeles County’s probation system before year’s end.
Powers was born in Stockton and holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from UC San Diego. He started his career in probation in San Diego in 1984, worked his way up to supervisor and was credited for implementing a model program to relieve juvenile hall overcrowding.
He moved to Stanislaus County in 2000 as probation manager and superintendent of juvenile hall, where he coordinated a $3 million addition. He made deputy chief in March 2002 and was appointed to the top spot nine months later.
