LASummerFEST’s Shakespeare in the Park series stages the final three performances of “Othello” at Rivendale Park in Towsley Canyon Friday, Saturday and Sunday, August 11-13, starting at 8 p.m. each night.
Admission and parking are free.
Director Tiger Reel’s production is a sleek 120-minute adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic. Set in present-day America, “Othello” follows two “special ops” military specialists who, upon returning from covert operations, become embroiled in jealousy and mistrust, finding that they cannot leave behind the violence and suspicion of the battlefield.
Reel is a new director to the Santa Clarita Shakespeare Festival and “Othello” marks his debut with the company. Reel is an award-winning director from Los Angeles and has directed Shakespeare productions around the country including the Houston Shakespeare Festival, Shakespeare Walla Walla, the Charlotte Shakespeare Festival and the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival.
Internationally Reel has worked at the English Theatre of Frankfurt, Germany, and toured Europe and Asia with the Reduced Shakespeare Company.
While the event is free, the hat will be passed for donations, in true theater tradition. Increased costs this season also prompted organizers to establish a Fundrazer campaign. The campaign ends August 16, and at press time, is 47 percent toward its goal of $6,500. Click here to donate.
