Parenting.com named its top 10 safest cities in the nation for 2014 and Santa Clarita California ranked third.
Parenting’s Safest Cities in America were selected by looking at FBI crime stats for cities with a population of 100,000 or higher. Parenting looked at the violent crime rate, the number of sex offenders per capita and the Institute for Economics & Peace’s Index, which examines “the absence of violence” across the U.S., including factors such as availability of small arms and the presence of police.
Santa Clarita has seen its overall crime rate decline over the last five years, despite an increase in population, which according to the California Department of Finance is currently at 213,500.
The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Department and City attribute the safety ranking to proactive programs such as the Crime Prevention Unit, COBRA team (Career Offender Burglary Robber Assault) and partnerships with schools, businesses and residents.
“Public safety is an important quality of life work effort for the City of Santa Clarita. Making sure our residents feel safe, that crime remains low and that we are continually assessing trends, staffing levels and needs is a top priority for the City Council,” said City Manager Ken Striplin.

Hurray for Our #Awesometown!! Woot! Woot!
Hurray for Our #Awesometown!! Woot! Woot!
Are they accounting for all the creeps and heroin addicts? How do they judge a “safe city”?
This city is safe? If your part of the upper class it’s safe! I live in Canyon Country… I dare whoever decided to name us safe to walk down Jakes Way at night! SCV is on the sketchy side!

Such a joke.
Such a joke.
Oh my right :(
You do know about the meth houses, right?
No ?! Like everyone knows where they are ?!
I have family in law enforcement – not everything gets out into the news. It’ safe, sure, like pockets of any other area/city of Southern California. But the ugly is very ugly.
At least you have an in so you can be wiser ;)
Exactly – but don’t be convinced by just the pretty new streets. There’s also a high level of alcoholism – especially among women/moms. It’s definitely not all it’s cracked out to be.
I dunno. “Parenting” obviously doesn’t read the police blotters you guys post. What were the First and Second Best Cities? Los Angeles and Chicago?
There is no crime-less towns anywhere on this earth….but when comparing stats of other places, our town (including Canyon Country) is pretty good.
Thank the Sheriffs!
Nothing is ever good enough for people in Santa Clarita. They get a compliment, and then complain about it.
Yah, right…how about the Meth Houses?
Obviously someone has their head in the sand!
I live in canyon country…safe? Maybe not in the Hud housing areas ! It was by design the hud housing was placed here . My god, not in Valencia!
There is HUD housing in Valencia. Orchard Arms, Canterbury Village, others.
Hope nobody confuses “safe” with “crime-free.” It’s all relative. If the average number of major crimes per day for a city of our size is 11, then an “unsafe” city has 12 and a “safe” city (like Santa Clarita) has 10. That’s still 10 major crimes per day, or 3,650 per year.
I thought Modesto would’ve made the list
Yeah? OK..
If they only knew the truth. I called Scv home for 34 years. Safest city is an illusion and when people hear this they let their guards down so this is irresponsible advertising.
