Original story:
A 24-year-old Las Vegas woman was killed early Sunday when the SUV in which she was riding rear-ended a parked tractor-trailer on Interstate 5 north of Castaic.
According to a report from CHP Officer James S. Buterbaugh, the crash occurred at about 4 a.m. when, “for reasons yet to be determined,” the driver of a 2007 Honda Pilot “veered to the right onto the west shoulder and struck the rear end” of a 2012 Freightliner.
The driver of the big-rig, an unnamed 54-year-old man from Carson City, Nev., was asleep inside his truck. He was uninjured, but the collision broke his tractor-trailer’s rear axle.
The driver of the SUV was identified only as a 25-year-old man from Bakersfield. He was transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia for treatment of minor injuries.
The female passenger of the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name has not been released.
The speed at which the SUV was traveling has not yet been determined, according to Buterbaugh’s report. Weather conditions were described as cool and clear.
The collision shut down all northbound freeway lanes for several hours.
