The College of the Canyons women’s soccer team was held scoreless in the second half of Tuesday’s match against Taft College, but its three goals in the first half was enough to hold off the visitors at COC’s Upper Field. With the win, the Cougars improve to 2-1-2 overall.
Freshman Lizzie Rivas got the scoring going just seven minutes into the game as the newcomer punched the ball in after a pass from Anabell Gonzalez.
Canyons added another score nine minutes later when freshman Kelsey Sherry floated the ball over Taft’s keeper, after a cross from Stacey Atwater, for her first goal of the season.
Sophomore Annika Wilson set up another Canyons goal in the 41st minute as Stacey Atwater ripped her second goal of the season.
Taft scored two goals in the second half, one in the 54th minute and another at the close of the game, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Cougars.
Canyons outshot Taft 10-9, but was held to just two shots in the second half, compared to Taft’s seven shots. Atwater led the team with three tallies and Wilson had two shots.
Sophomore goalie Katherine Koury allowed two goals and made four saves in 90 minutes of play.
Canyons will return to action on Friday Sept. 20, as they host San Diego Mesa at 4 p.m.
