lamppostLamppost Pizza on Bouquet Canyon Road is now closed. The restaurant was a mainstay in the Santa Clarita Valley for more than 25 years.

Iced Dreams Ice Cream Cafe at 28440 Haskell Canyon also closed down recently, according to a message attributed to the owner posted on social media.

“I’m sorry to announce that we are closing down,” according to a message from owner Scott on the ice cream parlor’s Facebook page. “It’s been an amazing year with all the good people, all of our customers/friends that supported us and believed in us. Unfortunately the numbers aren’t there for us to continue at this point at this capacity.

“I am committed to continue, to find a way to make it back,” he continued. “Please contact me if you have suggestions, any ideas, any resources, any input, to help keep the Dream alive.”

Swirly’s Frozen Yogurt at 23886 Copperhill Drive in Valencia closed down recently, according to a recording on on their contact number.

wendyslogoThe owner of four Wendy’s locations in Santa Clarita is selling them to Chris Hutchinson, but none of the locations is scheduled to close.

“I am writing to inform you that we have entered into an agreement to sell our restaurants and wind up our related business activities,” wrote R. B. Montgomery Jr., president of Four Corners Inc, which owned Wendy’s Santa Clarita.

  4. Travis Hastings no more Lamppost!

  5. Oh no! Not the Lamppost

  6. Melanie Lynn says:

I didn’t even get to try Iced Dreams :(, but the reviews on yelp made me a little nervous to try it honestly

  7. It was good, just bad location..

  8. Sandra Caipo says:

To bad! We need to stop going to these chain places and go to the mom and pop more it’s the only way

    • the “chain places” like this are franchised. Meaning, moms & pops own them. The only real differences are the recipes and the brand name. Otherwise, franchised businesses (like Wendy’s) ARE mom & pop stores. It’s not as if some big company called “Wendy’s” owns and operates the individual stores. Not at all. (We mention this only because most people probably don’t realize that.)

    • Sandra Caipo says:

I meant more like dominos, Pizza Hut, Olive Garden etc. thanks for clarifying about the franchises though!

    • Domino’s and Pizza Hut are also franchised.

    • But all Wendy’s, Toppers, Rita’s, etc all taste the same. A recipe makes a HUGE difference, it’s the reason chains taste samey and true mom and pops taste like nothing else! Wendy’s is NOT a mom and pop!!!!

    • A large company named Wendy’s IS operating each store, as each store is serving the exact same thing using the exact same recipe from the exact same supplier, sitting under the exact same heat lamps.

    • Jared Gardner – that’s what you’re buying when you buy a franchise – the marketing, and the product (menu & experience) that comes with the brand. But operationally and in terms of ownership, it’s the individual store owner’s money & future that’s on the line, just like any other restaurant that’s owned by an individual. And in the case of Wendy’s, it’s the individual owner of the 4 Wendy’s locally who decides to sponsor SCVTV’s Student Athlete of the Week with his own money. It’s not corporate money.

    • Sandra Caipo says:

I had no idea dominos and Pizza Hut were Franchised I thought it was corporate. Is there a way we can find out which places are franchises and which ones are corporate?

    • Ben Fletcher says:

Woah there, there are distinct but subtle differences between different locations, even of non-franchised places: they do not all taste the same. Except for McDonalds, where literally everything is actually the same.

  9. Jay Romick says:

    Swirleys closed also last week

  10. These small places are closing because too many people go to the large chains and corporations.

    • glady says:

deanna not necessarily closing cause their going to big chains…money is tight…period…..prices go up and up but wages increase once a yr. wages not keeping up with food prices sky rocketing…so if you can afford the market , the restaurants become too high

  11. Andrew Moore Vicki Murray Stevie Harrison Cait Lopez aww bye lamppost

  12. Lisa Mercurio Brent Gerstenberger

  13. I’m drinking away my sorrows away at Don Cucos

  14. Aww. Right in the elementary school lunch time feels!

  15. James Barker Kristen Szromba Giordan Jansen

  16. Not surprised about Lamppost Pizza!

  17. The over-saturation of the froyo/ice cream market continues to claim its last victims, and it looks the inevitable effects of the unsustainably sudden DIY pizza boom have begun as well.
    Food fads are fickle.
Sad to see people losing their businesses.

  18. Thanks Toppers. Thanks Rita’s. You’re like the Wal Mart of the food game.

  19. Kristen I was only half listening when you mentioned this, but now it fully hit me… This is so sad!

  20. Tiana Marie says:

Mike Savaikie no more lamppost :(

  21. Patty Ann says:

I spoke with an owner of a pizza place in Palmdale. He told me mom and pop places are taxed, have to pay for insurance (liability etc) pay into unemployment accts for each employee. Different licenses you name it. It cost a lot to own your own business.

    • Yes that’s true but unless you want to lose everything you have you better get the insurance because one small accident and your seemingly best employee will take you to the cleaners for everything you own. It does cost a lot to own any food service business, if you go with a franchise they charger you for everything you have to abide by corporate rules and fees ect…. if you own your mom n pop you have no one to support you and chances are you will fail because most people think its very easy to run a food business. Its not, you work for yourself and I mean really work because you cant trust that your employees wont skim off the sales and give away or steal your food from the back door. Even in franchise businesses and corporate owned businesses this happens.

    • Patty Ann says:

My brother and sister in law have owned three different businesses (not a franchise) in the last 40 years. After seeing the bad, I have decided it was not something I would want to do. If it wasn’t an employee taking money from the till, giving away free food in their first place, it was dealing with kids coming in and stealing. She even had her big heavy potted trees stolen from the front on her shop. A year later she saw them in the front yard of a house close to the shop. She got out of her car went to the door and told them to return them by the next day or the Sheriff’s would be called….they were there the next morning!…..I was a sales rep for a candy company and would have to call on C-stores, independent and franchise. You could see the difference.

  22. Adam Viescas says:

    That sucks I’ll miss lamppost

  23. Kim Sloey says:

Darn! I have many great memories at lamppost, having worked there all through high school. I always had dreams to revamp the place sad to see it closed. As for Iced dreams, I am sad to see that go too, great ice cream! wish I had a chance to eat at both places one last time!!

  24. Aw so many memories there!

  25. Troy Yudin says:

    Vicki Ackerman Yudin

  26. Hadn’t been there in years, but Lamppost was one of my favorite pizza places growing up and was a huge Saugus staple for such a long time. Sad to see it go. Makes me wanna go play Street Fighter II and Samurai Shodown.

  27. This is why it’s so important to support local family business. Santa Clarita is too busy trying to become “Awesome Town”. It’s losing the simple beauties.

  28. So sad to see the icon go.

  29. Wendy’s used to have the best chicken strips (15 years ago). All white meat, breaded to perfection. Yummy. Then they changed them :(

  30. Amy Copp Lodes Jen Jewell

  31. Aw this makes me sad!!!

  32. I tried to tag Wheels, but it won’t let me. Can ypu try, Amy Amy Copp Lodes

  33. Dude, Jacob Boje! RIP Lamppost

  34. Its hard the Food Service business. People want great food for low cost and quickly. Rent on retail space is to high which is the major contributor to most of these places closing. Franchise fees is another, and mismanagement is high up there. My husbands been in the industry for 25+ years and even with all his vast experience its a struggle

  35. Oh and always remember Location Location Location…. if your not in the right location then you should look around know your demographic.

  36. Can you really call it a mainstay if no one went there?

  37. A lot of great memories at that place.

  38. Dane Ilario says:

I’m a little sad to see Lamppost go, but I gotta say…last time I was there wasn’t great. The quality had really dropped off.

  39. Who cares?
    That place sucks!

  40. Awe so sad about lamppost. I remember going there for lunch I high school. The best pizza and ranch!

  41. Since a lot of you have mentioned chains vs. Independents I have a question as an independent restaurant owner. Thank God we are doing well but it is a struggle. My parents started the restaurant 37 years ago and I opened my location 15 years ago. My question however is this. Why at chain restaurants are people willing to wait 45 min to an hour for a table and at an independent 20 min is too long? For example Olive Garden has horrible service IMO and mediocre food but it is packed and has a huge waiting list. What makes chains with poor service and mediocre food more desirable?

  42. Scott S says:

At the rate things are closing and have closed in the SCV, there isn’t going to be much left pretty soon. What’s the ever increasing population going to to do? Funny the Presidents campaign slogan about change sure has come true…only the change in the SCV is a lot of empty retail space as compared to 6 years ago!
