Los Angeles Mayor Michael D. Antonovich announced that two additional CL-415 SuperScoopers will arrive for service in L.A. County on Oct. 9, augmenting the two SuperScoopers currently leased from the government of Quebec.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department has leased the fire-fighting aircraft to prepare for widespread highly flammable conditions caused by a four-year drought, coupled with mandatory water restrictions which have stressed native and ornamental vegetation — conditions similar to those which led to the rapid spread of multiple catastrophic wildfires in Northern California.
In the event that early and significant El Nino rainfall arrives, the fire department is prepared to return of all four SuperScoopers as early as November.
SuperScoopers are a fixed-wing aircraft that can carry up to 1,620 gallons of water and take only 12 seconds to scoop water from a lake and inject it with fire-resistant foam – a combination up to three times more effective than water alone. They can be airborne in as little as five minutes and fly three hours before refueling. In addition, an Erickson Aircrane Type I Helitanker, which is capable of delivering 2,200 gallons per drop, was also leased for the 2015 fire season.

Eric Garcetti, is Mayor!
Of some other city. Marsha McLean is our mayor.
Nope you said Antioch is Mayor of LA…he is not!
Yes, Antonovich is mayor of Los Angeles County, not Los Angeles city. Note that WE didn’t say anything; you’re reading a press release. HE said it. (And yes, about a dozen years ago the Board of Supervisors voted to authorize the title.)
Ok…
What are they super scooping?
They scoop water out of the lakes and drop on wildfires. :)
Pretty sure its water to be used to combat wild fires, see the float coming off of the wing? The plane looks like it is designed to land on water, hence why I think it scoops water.
What water? ?
Yay!!!!’
Michael D. Antonovich is a Member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. He is not the Mayor of Los Angeles. That’s like me saying I’m the mayor of LA bcz my friends decided to call me that.
Mayor is just a title. It has no legal significance. The Board of Supervisors voted about a dozen years ago to authorize the board chairman (this year it’s Antonovich) to use the title of mayor. Regardless, to us he’ll always be King Michael.
Go Canada thanks a lot….
