Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies responded to a pair of calls about wild bears on Tuesday, according to station officials.
“We had two different bear calls,” said Shirley Miller, station public information officer.
“The bear call in the morning was from up old Ridge Route Road near Templin Highway (in the Lebec area),” Miller said. “Deputies recognized it to be the same bear that had visited Gorman over the weekend, the one pictured on top of a mobile home.
“Apparently, he was edging closer to the dog kennels up there, and when a citizen went to confront the bear, the bear didn’t seem to be that afraid,” she said.
Deputies called California Department of Fish & Wildlife officers and provided assistance once the officers arrived at the scene.
“The bear went up into a tree, then Fish & Wildlife tranquilized it and transported it to a more remote area,” Miller said. “He didn’t seem to be afraid of people, so it was just a public safety matter as well as safety for the bear.”
Deputies reportedly nicknamed the bear “Houdini,” because of its disappearing act.
“I’m not sure which deputy nicknamed the bear ‘Houdini,’ but it’s because the bear’s been surfacing and resurfacing,” Miller said.
On Tuesday afternoon, SCV Sheriff’s Station deputies received a call about another bear, this one spotted much closer to local residents.
“A citizen called us from Stevenson Ranch called and said their teenager was out in the backyard and happened to notice there was a bear in the yard,” Miller said.
“When deputies responded, the bear moved from that yard into another backyard, then fled up a hillside and out of view,” she said. “So we did not need to call Fish & Wildlife officers.”

Land is being taken away from Wild Life ! Wander if Land Developers thought about Wild Life ?
Builders don’t care. I was born here. Worked the carrot fields on the Real dirt road Newhall Ranch Road. The bears would pace up and down the road . we would see many deer and coyotes. Poor wild life.
It’s disgusting! Shame on acc council for allowing the building of all these cookie cutter houses…..not like we already have a bunch of people here in scv…i sitt at a damn like for 10mins I feel…

About 4 months ago. At about 2p.m. he was on his way to Towsly Cyn. On the other side of the freeway.

I’d love to know just how long you’ve lived here, those of you who decry more people coming to push out the wildlife! It’s the typical “drawbridge syndrome” — I’m here, now pull up the drawbridge and don’t let any more in! We’ve been here since 1967 and have seen many changes–not all great. We love the animals, too, and have lots around our current home in Placerita Canyon. We just learn to live with them and keep our domesticated animals safe!
They were probably just dropping by Scared O’Bears Ranch to visit John Boston.
WHERE in Stevenson Ranch was the bear? Address, street, bear moved from one yard to the one next door and up the hill: WHICH Hill? Need to know where to be on the lookout, I live in SR and think this must be near the top of Pico Cyn but it’s a huge area! Story is useless, reporters are supposed to ask questions of the Sheriffs/ sources and inform the public. The bear was moved “further out” somewhere but there’s a 2nd one, that can’t be all.
However I agree with sentiment about driving out native animals: I moved here from the Hollywood Hills, where 25 years ago we had mtn. lions and deer roaming at the tops of the canyons but it’s over-building that made them predatory. Disgraceful that Newhall Ranch Rd. is getting another massive development, the freeways in rush hour are parking lots already — people move out here for more space but greed is killing the advantages of SCV.
Evil greedy people with no hearts would only keep building killing wildlife! All for money! Makes me sick.
STOP BULDING HOUSES! WE HAVE ENOUGH PEOPLE IN SCV…I WAITE AT SIGNAL LIGHT FOR A BOUT 10MINS! STOP BRINGING MORE PEOPLE HERE & MORE CRIME! & STOP KILLING THE WILD LIFE’S HOMES! THEY DIDNT ASK FOR THIS!
I ran into a bear while walking my dogs very late night in early June. Scared the heck out of me, but there was no interaction with it other than me looking at it and it looking at me. He was just cruising up Sagecrest Circle, going for a bear walk, hum dee dum dee dum. He had been spotted by other neighbors on other nights too. At least, we’re assuming it’s the same bear.
