Three dozen children who attend the CARE Learning Academy-SCV Tutors got an up-close and personal look at all the sights and, especially, the sounds of a professional audiology center last week as they toured Nola Aronson’s Advanced Audiology.
“They were such a great group of kids,” said Aronson, a longtime Santa Clarita Valley resident who has been helping people address hearing loss since 1987. “The children who came were very smart and asked a lot of questions — a lot of very good questions.”
The children were able to see how a hearing test is done, which, Aronson says, takes some of the mystery out of audiology testing. “It’s a painless, comfortable process, and seeing it firsthand helps adults and children alike recognize that it’s not something to be feared.”
Some of the kids’ questions focused on what causes people to suffer hearing loss, and under what circumstances might they need hearing aids. They learned about the job of an audiologist, as Aronson and her team — which has a combined 60 years of experience — demonstrated the latest technology in testing and digital hearing aid equipment.
“Definitely, the kids learned a lot,” said Lou Bautista, Center Director for CARE Learning. “We had one child whose dad actually goes to Nola, and we didn’t know that until we got there.”
“The kids asked a lot of questions,” Bautista said, adding that some of the children — summer program participants who ranged in age from pre-kindergarten to 15 — were wondering if hearing can be restored once it’s lost. They learned that, while it cannot be restored, the impacts of some hearing loss can be managed through the use of hearing aids.
The CARE Learning group received audiology-themed goodie bags, and “the kids loved the goodie bags,” Bautista said.
Aronson said the most popular part of the visit seemed to be the demonstration of how a modern hearing test works, using state-of-the-art technology that actually shows what’s happening inside someone’s ear.
“We take a lot of pride in helping people hear better, because it can have a major impact on someone’s day-to-day quality of life,” Aronson said. “So, we like to invite groups to our office, kids and adults, and show them what it’s all about. Once they see — and hear — what it is we do, they develop a better understanding of hearing loss and hearing aids, and how much technology can improve people’s lives.”
Nola Aronson’s Advanced Audiology (www.scvadvancedaudiology.com) was established in September 2010. Before then, Aronson successfully grew two other practices in Santa Clarita and has helped hearing impaired patients since 1987. Advanced Audiology is the largest diagnostic hearing center in the SCV, and the community’s leader of advanced technology and invisible solutions.
