Now and Then in the SCV | Commentary by Darryl Manzer
| Thursday, May 14, 2015

darrylmanzer0215Just so all y’all don’t think all I do is complain about the California High Speed Rail Boondoggle, Mentryville and the record-breaking length of time it is taking to complete the construction on Newhall Avenue south of Main Street in Old Town Newhall, I have other activities to tell you about.

Fairy shelter

The Domestic Violence Center is having a breakfast and auction of little “Fairy Shelters” this Saturday morning. They will be at Heritage Junction in what we call “Quester’s Court,” which is up the hill from the old Saugus Train Station. There will be a great breakfast and some really neat “Fairy Shelters.” I promised not to call them “Fairy Traps,” so forget that I even wrote that. The breakfast starts at 9 a.m. and continues until noon. I hope to see all y’all there. Bring money; this is a great cause to support.

And the next event is … I’m being auctioned off for a good cause. I and maybe 20 or so other eligible gentlemen are offering all manner of services for the lady with the highest bid. I’m offering brunch at the Egg Plantation, a VIP Historical Tour of our fair valley, followed by a dinner, too. All of the other gentlemen have similar offers. I think mine is the best.

So what organization is auctioning off us eligible guys? None other than the local Soroptimist International of Santa Clarita Valley. The members of the organization raise money for all manner of programs for women and girls. They always seem to be doing so much for so many, and they need lots of help doing it. We all can help by giving a little time and a lot of money to this cause.

Where and when do you get a chance to buy me? This Saturday at 6 p.m., you can be at the Tesoro Clubhouse, 23721 Stoney Creek Drive, 91354.

There are future events I’ll be attending, too. Tuesdays are Taco Nights at Maria’s in Agua Dulce. Wednesday is Taco Night at the ‘49er in Acton. Friday nights can find me singing a little at the ‘49er or maybe the VFW, and on Saturday karaoke is at either Bergie’s or JJ’s (formerly named Mulligan’s).

The Santa Clarita Valley Blues Festival is on the 31st at Heritage Junction all day. I think things are a little busy.

This is a long way from when we had to go to that lesser valley to the south to do anything.

I’m wondering where the domestic violence center is that helps men. I’m also wondering about the programs to benefit men and boy. Where are these things, or don’t we matter ?
