Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s deputies responded to a crash on Bouquet Canyon Road at 9:25 p.m. Wednesday night that left one person dead and injured several others.
“The driver was changing lanes, when his vehicle struck another vehicle,” Deputy Shoemaker said. “The driver then lost control of his car and slid up onto the northbound sidewalk of Bouquet Canyon just north of Wellston.”
Shoemaker said the car then collided with a large utility pole.
“The impact crushed the car and the driver was pronounced deceased at the scene,” Shoemaker said.
The driver was later identified as 24-year-old Andrew Straughan from Santa Clarita, said Lieutenant Smith from the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.
His Facebook profile identifies him as a Marine Corps recruiter (although he was at one time an active duty Marine, but not a recruiter, according to Gunnery Sgt. Justin Kronenberg of the USMC Recruiting Command) and an alumnus of Bowman High School.
The two passengers and driver of the other vehicle sustained minor injuries and were later transported.
The crash is still under investigation. However, officials said they are looking into speed as a factor and are unsure at this time if alcohol played a role.
