[KHTS] Castaic Lake Water Agency officials have announced the new general manager following the planned retirement of Dan Masnada.
Matthew Stone’s appointment was approved by the CLWA board of directors in a unanimous vote at its meeting on Wednesday evening.
“The board went through a recruiting process of about 35 candidates, narrowing it down to the final two before picking (Stone),” said Masnada. “It was a pretty rigorous process.”
Stone has worked “in water resources for my entire career,” he said.
He brings close to 30 years of experience in the field to his new position, most recently from his post as the general manager for Rancho Water District in Temecula.
“I was exposed to a lot of different agencies,” said Stone. “I got to work on a lot of different things.”
On Dec. 28, Stone will replace Masnada as the active general manager.
“There should be a really good transition,” Stone predicted, adding that Masnada will be advising as a consultant during the transitional period in the position.
“He’ll be able to pick my brain,” said Masnada, “and I’ll be able to do a brain dump on him.”
He also expressed faith in Stone’s ability to jump into the position.
“He’ll be able to hit the ground running,” Masnada said.
In the middle of the transition, the weather phenomenon known as El Nino will hit Southern California, putting Stone in a better position than CLWA’s 2015 year, as the storms brought on by the weather system are expected to bring some relief from the California drought.
“El Nino will certainly help from a water standpoint,” said Masnada. “But we plan for the worst and hope for the best.”
As part of planning for the worst, Stone will work closely with the board of directors to develop a plan to conserve water in the Santa Clarita Valley as mandated by the state of California.
“I’d like to make sure that I’m working closely with the board on (water conservation efforts),” Stone said.
However, he feels that CLWA will be a welcome transition in his work.
“I’m intrigued by the challenge,” he said. “It’s a mixture of everything I’ve done in the past and some new things just to make it more interesting,”
