Residents in the area of Abelia Road were inconvenienced Monday night by a search for an allegedly suicidal man running through the neighborhood with a gun to his head.
Lt. Mark Hershey of the Santa Clarita Valley sheriff’s station said that around 6:30 p.m., neighbors of David King, 44, called and said that water was coming from inside of his house and that the yard was unkempt, wondering about his safety.
Deputies responded to do a welfare check, and were greeted by King, who was holding what appeared to be a handgun to his head and saying he was going to kill himself before running back into the house and shutting the door.
Deputies went around the back, where King had run out the back door and towards the wash, which runs near the homes. A quick search of the home determined that the gun in his hand was a pellet gun. Streets were blocked in the area for more than an hour as deputies tried to resolve the case and find King; he was located in a storm drain east of Abelia Road and taken into custody without further incident.
He was arrested on suspicion of possessing controlled substances (anti-anxiety drugs found in his pocket were prescribed to someone else) and brandishing a replica weapon. Also, because the home where King had been living belongs to his parents; he could face charges of vandalism for its condition.
He was booked at Twin Towers in downtown Los Angeles and is under observation. He is being held in lieu of $20,000 bail and is due in court on Wednesday.
