The City of Santa Clarita’s Thursdays@Newhall series, presented by Galpin Subaru, continues in May with its third installment of the 2015 season. Main Street in Old Town Newhall will come to life each Thursday evening with a variety of events, including street chalk art, Japanese festival dancing, traditional rods and customs, a Masquerade-themed block party, an appearance by animator and filmmaker Javier Barboza and a performance by Susie Glaze & The Hilonesome Band.
From 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, the Old Town Newhall Association presents street chalk art at ArtSLAM. Residents can watch more than 20 chalk art pieces take shape while perusing other works on display from local and student artists. At 7:30 p.m. participants can take part in JAM Sessions, hosted by the Ford Theatre Foundation, as Christine Inouye leads celebratory bon dances, set to ondo music by Japenese folk fusion ensemble Minyo Station.
From 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 14, the Revved Up car show will feature traditional rods and customs, specifically 40’s, 50’s and early-60’s vehicles with a primary emphasis on low-buck and home-built using period-correct components. The event will also include music, food trucks and adult beverages. Local residents interested in submitting an automobile for consideration in Revved Up can apply online or contact the City’s Arts and Events office at aeo@santa-clarita.com.
Don masks and formal attire on Thursday, May 21 when SENSES returns with a free Masquerade block party from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The evening will feature the scintillating 19-piece, 1930’s New Orleans Orchestra and Cabaret Show of Vaud and the Villains, food trucks and adult beverages.
The May lineup of Thursday@Newhall events finishes on Thursday, May 28 with the ARTree Speaker Series, presented in partnership with the CalArts Community Arts Partnership and the City of Santa Clarita and SCVTV presents the OutWest Concert Series. From 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. the ARTree Speaker Series will feature Los Angeles animator, filmmaker and artist Javier Barboza at the Old Town Newhall Library, located at 24500 Main Street. Barboza will discuss his surreal and narrative methods of creativity that tackles the complexities of urban life.
Meanwhile, SCVTV presents the OutWest Concert Series with Susie Glaze & The Hilonesome Band, a newgrass Americana folk fusion quintet, beginning at 8:00 p.m. at the Repertory East Playhouse located at 24266 Main Street. Tickets can be purchased here.
