The City of Santa Clarita, the Santa Clarita Public Library and the Friends of the Santa Clarita Public Library will join together to host the 9th Annual Family Literacy Festival on Saturday, Nov.14, 2015.
The free event will showcase stories, theatrical productions, songs, dance and crafts from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Old Town Newhall Library, located at 24500 Main Street.
The Family Literacy Festival brings together a multitude of students, teachers, artists, future educators and education enthusiasts representing elementary, secondary and college districts in Santa Clarita, to partner on interactive stations in the theme of “Full STEAM (Science Technology Engineering, Art and Math) Ahead.”
Incorporating a mix of entertainment and interactive activities, the event will ignite a passion for exploring STEAM subjects in local youngsters and their families. Free books will be provided to children from birth to 6th grade, while supplies last.
“Literacy is not just about being able to read and write. The power of literacy is that it gives you the ability to communicate effectively which in turn allows you to connect with the world around you,” said Mayor Marsha McLean. “This is a very important quality that I believe every child, teen and adult should have. I’m hoping this festival will encourage that in everyone who attends,” she added.
The 2015 event will bring several entertaining and adventurous events. Mayor Pro Tem Bob Kellar will commence the event with a welcome speech and a book reading, followed by local author readings from Shannon Okahara (author of “Tooth on the Loose”) and David G. Derrick Jr. (author of “Play with your Food”).
Balloon Storyteller Annie Banannie will delight audiences with her unique talents and interactive show, and Santa Clarita’s own Ballet Company will provide a classical ballet performance.
In the theme of the festival, five hubs focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math will be stationed in and around the library.
Festival goers will have the opportunity to learn about natural science at a station presented by the Placerita Canyon Nature Center, or explore anatomy with representatives from Hart High School.
For the more technology inclined, the Communication Station will take visitors to the past with historic radios, typewriters and letter writing demos. The technology hub will also feature a Pop-up Digital Library, and a chance to meet and interact with live robots at the Robot Station.
Those interested in engineering can learn how to become rock balancing artists, participate in creative play at the Structure Station, or put their best problem solving skills to use at the Marble Run Station.
The Art Hub will allow festival goers express themselves freely through yarn bombing with Forge Ahead Arts, crafts from ARTree and a drawing lesson from artist Michael Powell. The Math Hub features an oversized chess game, rocket launcher station and a variety of board games.
In addition, the festival will also include a mad scientist photo lab, story times and food trucks. The Friends of Santa Clarita Public Library will be giving away packs of four FREE tickets every hour to see the new “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” at a private screening on Saturday, December 19.
