Volunteers contributed more than $1 million worth of their time to the city of Santa Clarita over the past year for various city programs and events.
According to report by the city’s volunteer coordinator, Tess Simgen, in 2014 the number of volunteer hours increased by 92 percent over 2013 – amounting to an estimated $1,058,544 in time volunteered.
Over the past five years, the number of volunteers for various events, programs and projects have increased from 4,100 in 2010 to 6,803 in 2014, the report states.
“This is a community engaged in giving back,” said Hope Horner, the city’s human services administrator. “We have such an incredible community that loves Santa Clarita and is invested and wants to keep it how it is.”
Staffers have been reviewing the city’s Volunteer Engagement Program in an effort to give volunteers an even greater variety of volunteer opportunities that benefit the community.
The review will also help the city save a little money by strategically utilizing volunteers on programs and events.
“We want to make it as easy as possible, from online to communication with volunteers,” said Horner. “We conduct surveys to find out from volunteers how we can improve on registration and their involvement, ask them if it is meaningful, if there is anything they want improved.”
