Vasquez Canyon Road

CANCELED DUE TO WEATHER

annual-youth-grove-evening-remembrance-43702[KHTS] – The Santa Clarita community is invited to come together for the 10th anniversary of the annual Evening of Remembrance for the city of Santa Clarita’s Youth Grove, an area where friends and families can remember young lives lost in traffic collisions.

“We have 91 names (on stumps) and we’re adding two more names this year,” said Alice Renolds, a member of the city of Santa Clarita’s Blue Ribbon Task Force, along with her husband, Tom.

The Evening of Remembrance will begin with the Walk of Remembrance at 6:45 p.m. followed by the ceremony at 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday, September 9.

Jennifer Stift’s and Curtis Thompson’s names will be added to the Youth Grove this year.

Stift was killed in a crash in 2014 on Golden Valley Road.

“For me, it’s a time where I can see my son’s pictures and hear their names,” Alice Renolds said. “Further down the road, people don’t want to talk about them but to hear their name and see their picture, that’s what I need.”

The Renolds’ youngest sons, Danny and Timmy, were both killed in a car crash on Feb. 17, 2000.

There were five teens in the car that was speeding 100 mph down Soledad Canyon Road, she said.youthgrove

“The Sheriff’s deputies believed the driver was racing another car but they never could prove it,” Renolds said. “The driver lost control of car, spun around and hit the center divider, went upside down and hit another car on the other side of the road.”

Renolds’ sons were in the back seat of the car. Danny, who was just 15, was thrown about 60 feet from the car and killed instantly. Timmy, who was just 18, had his seatbelt on but was killed instantly. The other boy in the backseat was killed instantly.

The driver and passenger both survived.

The Renolds family now speaks at Every 15 Minutes events, Community Court, are members of the Blue Ribbon Task Force and attends the Evening of Remembrance.

“We have a slide presentation and glow sticks. We will break a glow stick when each name is read,” Renolds said. “A white rose is given to the parents for the walk and then they bring it up and put it on the tree stump with their child’s name.”

There will also be a singer.
“It’s a very simple, very short,” Renolds said, “but meaningful.”

  3. I have such mixed feeling about the Youth Grove . Yes it is a very humbling place where you can visit to remember, and also teach, but I hate the fact that it was built with room for growth.
