Saturday, August 4-Rice Canyon

Rice Canyon is one of the easiest hikes in Santa Clarita. It is a short 2 mile shoot off of East Canyon, and is gorgeous! It follows a Creek, which is mostly dry now, but can roar during winter! You’ll love the open grass lands, the Oak and Walnut Woodlands, and the Sage scrub. It is a total of 4 miles on this in and out trail with very little gain. Join Lise Meyers for the very first hike she will lead for CHC. Meet at the East Canyon Trail Head at 8:00 AM

Bring water, snacks, camera.

Saturday, August 11- East Walker Ranch

A moderate 4 mile loop through the rarely visited eastern portion of
Placerita canyon through the recently acquired East Walker Ranch open space. This is a very pretty hike with lots of chaparral and oak woodlands.  Some of the terrain will be steep, the pace will
be moderate, OK for energetic beginners. If you’d like a longer hike, you can add Golden Valley after the East Walker Ranch hike.

Meet at 8:00AM at the Golden Valley parking area, which is located just beyond the Walker Ranch Trail head on the left side of the street. You can park on the street, or the new lot, inside the gate. We will get started at 8:15.

Bring hiking poles, hat, sunblock, lunch and snacks and 2 quarts of water,
good boots WITH TREAD.

If you would like to add more mileage, we can do one of the trails at Golden Valley, across the street as well!

Saturday, August 18-Chilao School House Tour and Silver Moccasin Trail Hike-Easy

We will meet at Towsley Canyon at 8:30 AM and carpool together to the schoolhouse. After wandering around the area, we will hike between 8-10 miles on the Silver Moccasin Trail. This is close to Newcomb’s Ranch, so we can stop to have lunch there on our way out, if you’d like! Bring money for lunch, camera, hiking sticks and your Adventure Pass.

Saturday, August 18-Mt Baldy-Hard

At 10,068 ft, Mt San Antonio, or Mt Baldy, is the highest peak in the San Gabriel Mtns. Due to both the elevation and the steepness of the trail, this will be a Difficult and very Strenuous hike which is not suitable for beginning hikers. We will do an 11 mile loop with apx 4,000 ft gain, hiking up via the trail to the Ski Hut and on to the summit. We will return via the Devil’s Backbone trail to the Ski Lodge and then follow the dirt road back down to the Manker Flats parking area. If anyone in the group wishes to take the Ski Lift down to the parking area after reaching the Ski Lodge, you can do this, but you will then have to walk another mile from the Ski Lift parking lot to the Manker Flats parking area. Bring plenty of water, lunch, snacks, poles, and good hiking boots. While you are welcome to meet at Towsley Cyn to arrange carpools on your own to the trailhead, the leader will meet you at the trailhead at 7:30AM.

To meet at the trailhead, from I-210 in Upland, take the Mountain Ave/Mount Baldy exit and drive north on Mountain Avenue to the intersection with Shinn Road – veer left onto Shinn. Continue on for 4.3 miles. At a T junction with Mount Baldy Road, turn right and drive 9.0 miles to San Antonio Falls Road on the left, 0.3 miles past Manker Flats Campground. Park in dirt pull outs along the divided road next to San Antonio Falls road (a dirt road) with a pit toilet which is the trailhead and meet up point for the hike. Apx  ½ mile up the road is the Baldy Ski Lifts. If you go there, you have gone too far, but it is the closest point to use to google directions. You will need to display a Forest Adventure Pass for parking at the trailhead.

Saturday, August 25- Whitney Canyon

Beat the heat with a great 5 mile RT tour of Whitney Canyon today. There is almost no gain on this trail, but you will see interesting sites such as the sulphur springs, an intermittent stream which will probably by dry in August, and a (dry) waterfall. You will be done before lunch, but bring lots of water, snacks, and wear good shoes with tread! Bring your camera. We have often seen deer in this canyon! Meet at the trail head at 8:00 for an 8:15 departure.

Directions to Trailhead. Take the SR-14 freeway North from Valencia. Exit at the first offramp, Newhall Avenue, veer to the right. Turn right at the bottom of the offramp. You will enter the park and ride facility. Park. If there are no spaces to park, you can park for $5. In the MRCA parking lot to the left of the park and ride. The trail head is to the left of the park and ride. Look for everyone assembling at the SECOND green gate to the left.

Campfire Black Forest Brownies

2 cans Cherry Pie Filling

1 box Chocolate Cake Mix

2 Hershey Bars, broken into pieces

1/2 cup Walnut pieces

Whipped Cream for topping

Put the Cherry pie filling into the bottom of a dutch oven. Sprinkle dry cake mix evenly over the cherry pie filling. Sprinkle with walnut pieces and chocolate pieces. Cover the dutch oven. Place into coals. Put coals on top of oven lid. Cook for 40 minutes. Remove from heat and serve with whipped cream.

Get Rid of Ants Solution

This is a recipe for getting rid of those pesky ants that come every spring and summer. Mix up the solution, pack cotton balls in a jar cover, put the solution on and they will be gone.

Ingredients:
1 cup sugar 1 cup sugar1 cup sugar

3 Tablespoons boric acid

3 cups warm water

Directions:

Mix the sugar and boric acid well. Slowly add the warm water, mixing constantly so it won’t be lumpy. Store the solution in a jar until you are ready to use it. Then, put cotton into the top of a jar lid, saturate the cotton to the top with the solution. Place it in the location where it is needed. Dribble a little of the liquid down the side of the lid so the ants will find it more quickly.  Do not disturb the ants as they drink the solution. They will take the solution back to the colony, and the entire colony will disappear!

The solution lasts for a long time!
