LONG BEACH — College of the Canyons took a break from conference competition last week, with the Cougars instead taking on a field of athletes representing both four-year schools and local community colleges at the annual Cal State Long Beach ‘Beach Opener’ at Jack Rose Track on Saturday.
The Cougars came home with a number of top-10 finishes for both the men’s and women’s teams. COC competed in 12 events on the men’s side and six for the women’s squad. A full list of results can be found here.
Sophomore Slade Cavallaro was the top overall finisher for the Cougars after placing second in the 400h with a time of 55.39.
Leo Lambert III placed third in the 400m with a time of 49.20 and Marcel Sylvester recorded a leap of 1.96m in the high jump to finish fifth on the day. Maxwell Hudson threw a javelin 42.65m to place sixth.
In the sprints, Steven Arrington clocked a seventh-place time of 22:01 in the 200m and Calel Christian took eighth in the 100m at a time of 11.03. Louis Eusbi was eighth in the long jump at 6.31m and ninth in the javelin at 39.92m.
For the women’s team. Stephanie Martinez claimed the top finish with a fourth-place time of 10:52.72 in the 3,000m.
Takaira Beard was sixth in the high jump with a height of 1.58m. Sophia Stephan finished sixth in the 1,500m at a time of 5:04.70, and also placed 10th in the 800m at 2:30.36.
Canyons will next compete in the Occidental College Distance Carnival on Saturday, March 10.
