GOLETA – College of the Canyons finished fourth at the annual Sandpiper Invitational on Monday, led by a one-over-par score of 73 from freshman Justin Buenaventura.
The event, hosted by Santa Barbara City College, attracted a field of 12 schools from across the region, while providing a preview of the course which will also host the 2018 California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) State Championships.
Canyons trailed only third place Monterey Peninsula (378), second place Riverside City College (376) and event winner Cypress College (371).
COC posted the low score among Western State Conference (WSC) schools in attendance, which included host SBCC (391), Ventura (396) and Glendale (403).
Jones Comerford and Michael Lindgren both shot three-over rounds of 75 on the 7,159-yard course.
Jack Roycroft at 78 and Clayton Kucera at 80 were also included in the final tally for Canyons. Clemente Yanes had his score of 85 dropped.
The Cougars will return to conference play at WSC No. 10 hosted by Citrus College at San Dimas Gold Course on April 23.
The WSC Finals will be held Monday April 30, at Crystalaire Country Club. The 36-hole tourney will begin at 7 a.m.
