Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe is pleased to announce the County’s Safe Surrender Program celebrated success for the fifth time this year with the report of a safely surrendered newborn baby girl. This most recent safe surrender occurred on June 2, 2014 at a hospital in Tarzana. A baby girl was also safely surrendered on Memorial Day at a fire station in Lancaster.

As is standard practice, the newborn is in protective custody and will be placed with families approved for adoption by the Department of Children and Family Services.

“In the last two weeks, two mothers have made the difficult, but brave, choice to safely surrender their babies,” said Supervisor Knabe. “Now these two baby girls have the chance to grow-up and be part of a loving family. When we consider the alternative to what could have happened to these girls, we are thankful these mothers, who found themselves in a desperate situation, made the right decision for their babies. We must continue to spread the word about the Safe Surrender program so we can continue to protect the lives of our most vulnerable.”

This is the fifth Safe Surrender in Los Angeles County in 2014, and the 118th since the program began nearly 13 years ago. The program was initiated by Supervisor Knabe and approved unanimously by the Board of Supervisors in 2001. It allows someone to surrender an infant that is no more than three days old, as long as the infant shows no signs of abuse.

  7. Great advice, Derek. I’m sure you know the situation this mother was in. Right?

  8. Better then seeing or hearing a baby found in or by the dumpster but again I dnt agree it with it I can never do that with my kids I luv them too much to do that to them I dnt care what situation I’m in they didn’t bask to come in this world we choose to lay up in bed and make it

SMFH I agree with Derek Dahl it’s not fair and the not right thing to do that the poor innocent suffers and will be mess up for the rest of his life thanx alot teen mom show Mtv like those young couple gave away their daughter smh

  10. Jose Lopez Jose Lopez says:

No innocent child deserves to be give away dammmmit

  11. Kudos to the selflessness of this brave woman! She knew that the best thing for her child is a loving family who wants this little girl. What’s better? Should she have had an abortion? If I can’t raise my baby then nobody else can? And seriously, guys- 1 in 5 women are sexually assaulted in their lifetime, and yes, many times it’s with a gun to their head so save the judgement for the person who leaves their baby in a trash can. She gave this little girl a chance at a good life.

  12. Ignorant comments on here. Because a child is giving up for adoption means that child is going to “suffer”??? I have 3 friends who were adopted and all have the most amazing lives. Luckily they were given the chance to. None of you know the mothers situation or how she even became pregnant. Even if she was a careless teen, I’m sure not everyone posting here are saints. Everyone screws up from time to time, I respect those that step up when it comes to those innocent “little lives” and gives them a real chance.

  13. ANYTHING is better than another stomach wrenching news story of one more dead infant found in a trash bin!!!!!!!!!!! At least this baby has a chance at life.

  14. For the stupid people posting how the child will suffer, how ignorant do you have to be. My husband was given up when he was born and so were both of my brother in laws. They were given an amazing change with amazing parents who couldn’t have kids. So get off your high horse!! She gave that little girl a changes at a life the mother couldn’t give. I personal couldn’t give my kids up but I have a different life then she does. Don’t bash on her for doing something right. ( no blame no shame no name ) I’m glad she did the right thing and not kill her child.
