SCV Sheriff’s Crime Prevention Unit deputies and station detectives have noted an increase in the thefts of catalytic converters from cars in Santa Clarita Valley. The favored target of thieves has been the Toyota Prius (2005-2009).
If a catalytic converter is stolen, it can be a very costly part to replace. You may not be able to tell yours has been stolen by looking at your car, but you will know as soon as you try to start it up due to an extremely loud sound that you will hear.
To help prevent catalytic converter theft:
* Always park in well-lit areas and when you are at shopping centers try to park close to the entrances of buildings if possible, where there are a lot of people walking by.
* When at home, store your vehicle in the garage if you are able to do so.
Report Suspicious Activity
If you see suspicious activity, please report it to us so that deputies can check it out. Call our station at 661-255-1121, or if it looks like a crime is in progress, call 9-1-1.
