The driver of a 2006 Ford Fusion died Sunday morning when she collided with a traffic signal pole in Saugus and her car burst into flames.
The collision occurred at about 5:10 a.m. on Plum Canyon Road just east of Heller Circle.
Officer Ed Jacobs of the California Highway Patrol said the victim’s body was burned beyond recognition and as a result, it could not be determined whether she was an adult or a minor. It could only be determined that she was female.
According to the CHP report, the victim was traveling westbound on Plum Canyon Road when she veered or drifted onto the sidewalk and collided head-on into a traffic signal pole.
Her car was engulfed in flames and officers were unable to determine immediately whether she was burned alive, or died from the impact of the collision.
The collision remains under investigation and “impairment for alcohol and drugs is undetermined,” the report said. Conditions were clear and dry with clear visibility, the report said.
Emergency personnel pronounced the victim dead at the scene. Next of kin have not yet been notified.
A Sigalert was issued because the light fixture was hanging from the signal pole, posing an immediate danger to passers by.
