The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Santa Clarita Station will be conducting a DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint on Friday, February 21, in the City of Santa Clarita between the hours of 6 p.m. and 1:30 a.m.
The deterrent effect of DUI checkpoints is a proven resource in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol or drug involved crashes. Research shows that crashes involving alcohol drop by an average of 20 percent when well-publicized checkpoints are conducted often enough.
Deputies will be contacting drivers passing through the checkpoint for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment. Deputies will also check drivers for proper licensing and will strive to delay motorists only momentarily. When possible, specially trained officers will be available to evaluate those suspected of drug-impaired driving. Drivers caught driving impaired can expect jail, license suspension, and insurance increases, as well as fines, fees, DUI classes, other expenses that can exceed $10,000.
In 2011, nearly 10,000 people were killed nationally in motor vehicle traffic crashes that involved at least one driver or motorcycle rider with a blood alcohol concentration of .08% or higher. In California, this deadly crime led to 774 deaths because someone failed to designate a sober driver. “Over the course of the past three years, DUI collisions have claimed 49 lives and resulted in 893 injury crashes harming 1,113 of our friends and neighbors,” said Sgt. Joseph Jakl of the Risk Management Bureau.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent. Based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests, DUI Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence. Locations are chosen with safety considerations for the officers and the public.
Funding for these operations is provided to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety http://www.ots.ca.gov/ through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration http://www.nhtsa.gov/,

Its an illegal check point we can refuse to answer any question !!!!
“it is illegal …unless it’s done properly…”
It’s not an illegal checkpoint (obviously, because you just read the notice), and you can refuse to answer questions. Those two things are not mutually exclusive.
He’s referring to the violation of the Fourth Amendment.
Or…. Just don’t drink and drive?
That’s the whole point of a dui check point, to help discourage drunk driving, not to encroach on your constitutional rights. For the sake of anyone who lost someone to a drunk driver, please don’t drink and drive.
I would drive through a check point every day if it would avert a tragedy like the girl that killed her sister and an entire family or like the person who ran down a father and his children at Walmart in the valley….
I’ll bet that if they put 20-30 deputies across the street at the mall and next to Islands, from 6:00 pm – 1:30 am that they would make more arrests of people walking out of the restaurants drunk. Than at their precious check points
If you don’t drink and drive, you don’t have to worry about the checkpoints. :)
Sheep Sheep..
Why would anyone care if its legal or illegal. …..STOP DRINKING AND DRIVING
Hahaha Neil Somethingotherthan this why america is getting weak !!!
Well jenna if it discouraged drinking and driving you might have a point… Your manipulation doesn’t give you a moral high ground. The Supreme Court agrees DUI check point violates the 4th amendment, but said they would make an exception based on false and disproved science and only if the law enforcement agency follows a few guidelines which most don’t follow.
I love the if you don’t have anything hide argument… Hey same logic but let’s do your house now, police should be able to walk in search it whenever because if you have nothing to hide you should be ok with harassment and inconvenience anytime of day or night!
All you constitution, take it or leave it people, best not complain when you are stuck in one of these retarded checkpoints for 1 to 2 hours (not joking ask someone who has had to go through these pain in the ass. If you were drunk you are sober now)! Hope you don’t have a concert, movie, date or other activity that night because the jerks at the Sheriff’s department just decided your freedom isn’t important anymore.
Thank you officers
Hmmmm….so many people here are for Gestapo stops. For some reason the founding fathers believed this would fly in the face of liberty and freedom, but here so many would give up their freedom on the belief that these checkpoints do some kind of good. These stops are clear violation of the 4th Ammendment and you shouldn’t answer any questions. They have no right to detain you or search your vehicle and while you shouldn’t forcefully resist you should make it clear that your rights are being violated.
And all rights are out the frickin window when you kill someone because you just had to drink and drive. ..dang people
