[KHTS] – A Santa Clarita remote control hobby shop and raceway is hosting a fundraiser race Oct. 25 to help the family of a boy recovering from major injuries sustained in a motocross crash.

The SCVRC Raceway is donating the proceeds from races that Saturday to the Covarrubias family, whose 16-year-old son, Justin, was severely injured last month.

“(The support) has been overwhelming,” said Justin’s mother, Jamie Covarrubias, who has been alternating with her husband to stay by their son around the clock. “People are just jumping in to do what they can to help, and every little bit helps.”

Next Saturday’s race was initiated by Jake Mayo, a motocross racer who’s friends with Justin and sponsored by SCVRC Raceway. He contacted SCVRC Raceway, and they wanted to get involved.

“When I heard about it, I wanted to do something to help,” said Eric Schlaifer, owner of SCVRC Raceway and a motocross enthusiast himself.

“I broke my back back (riding in motocross) in 2004 — it wasn’t as serious, but I have a special place in my heart  for this type of thing,” Schlaifer said. “I just want to be able to help.”

Justin competed in four races on a Realto motocross track Sept. 28, when Justin’s bike crashed during his last race, leaving him a broken T-5 and T-6 vertebrae in the middle of his back.

Doctors have had difficulty in fully diagnosing the severity of Justin’s injuries because he developed complications from his treatments.

As of this morning, Jamie reported there was good news, because an aggressive breathing treatment is slowly reducing the amount of fluid in his lungs.

The treatment only started Wednesday, and Jamie Covarrubias is looking for signs of hope where she can, she said.

“Any good news, no matter how small, is great,” she said.

Justin has no feeling below his waist and a 3 percent chance of walking again, according to the initial diagnosis. However, the complications have made progress much harder to assess, Jamie Covarrubias said.

Entry into the races starts at $25 for the indoor clay offroad track for remote controlled cars.

The practice races are set to take place from 7-9:30 a.m. and racing begins at 10 a.m.

All proceeds will be donated to the Covarrubias family.
