Peter Lambert allowed only two hits over seven innings, and the bullpen finished off a 2-0 shutout win for the Lancaster JetHawks over the Inland Empire 66ers on Saturday night at San Manuel Stadium.
Lambert (3-3) recorded his third-straight win, allowing just two hits and striking out six over a career-high seven frames. He walked one batter.
Carlos Polanco and Salvador Justo threw perfect innings of relief to finish the club’s fourth shutout win of the season. Justo picked up his second save.
The JetHawks (23-20) moved a game ahead of Inland Empire (22-21) and now sit alone in second place in the South Division.
Lancaster scored its first run in the fourth inning. Yonathan Daza singled to right field with Sam Hilliard at second base. Hilliard was held at third, but Daza ventured too far off of first base and was chased down by first baseman Matt Thaiss. Hilliard scored during a rundown that eventually resulted in Daza being tagged out.
The run was enough for Lambert who faced the minimum into the fifth inning before allowing a leadoff single to Michael Barash. Lambert also walked a batter in the fifth, and a passed ball moved both runners into scoring position with one out. Lambert struck out a batter and induced an inning-ending ground out to get out of the jam.
Inland Empire starter Jose Rodriguez (4-3) allowed eight hits and struck out nine over six innings in the loss.
The JetHawks added an insurance run in the seventh against the 66ers bullpen. Hamlet Marte led off with a single, stole second base, moved to third on a Wes Rogers bunt and scored on a Garrett Hampson single.
The series continues on Sunday afternoon at San Manuel Stadium. Jesus Tinoco (1-0) is scheduled to start for the JetHawks against Luis Pena (2-3). First pitch is 2:05 p.m.
