Update: The victim has been identified as Joe Miller, 23, of Las Vegas.
[KHTS] – A man reportedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a mid-day Metrolink commuter train carrying 95 passengers.
The person, who was not identified by officials, reportedly committed suicide around 2:30 p.m. near Railroad Avenue and Market Street, in Newhall.
Homicide detectives are on scene and investigating the incident.
“Sadly, an individual did step onto our tracks this afternoon, the incident did result in a fatality,” said Scott Johnson, spokesman for Metrolink.
Homicide detectives will investigate any death that involves a vehicle or not suspected to be natural causes, according to a Sheriff’s Station officials.
Detectives have not made any statement regarding the circumstances of the death; however, it was initially reported as a suicide by deputies on scene.
“The train that was involved was northbound No. 209,” Johnson said. “The ultimate destination was going to be Via Princessa.”
“The incident occurred just south of our Newhall Station,” Johnson said, noting the train was about 10 miles from its destination.
“The incident occurred at a non-pedestrian area,” Johnson said. “There was no reason for that individual to be where the individual was.”
No additional details are being released at this time.
Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies are handling the investigation.
“There were 95 passengers on the train,” Johnson said. “At this point, because of its proximity, two buses are en route to taken those passengers to their final destination (Newhall to Via Princessa).”
Metrolink service on routes 209 and 218 was suspended and riders were asked to check Twitter @MetroLink for updated information regarding when normal service might resume.

Making a living that involves investigating these type of things, I’ve never seen one where the train did anything wrong. The tracks are there, stay off them, or be very alert. It’s very hard on the guys watching it happen (conductors, engineers and such).

Suicide is no joke. I feel bad for the person who felt they had no other options and worse for the ones he left behind. God have mercy on all.

Its not cool or funny to make light of or joke about this. Bad karma on u who did. When u lose someone close, people will mock them then u won’t think the same. This man has a family and is a human being who sadly thought the only escape was this. Kurt Smith, 0, the victim 1. Have respect people.

Such a tragic way to go. My heartfelt sympathy to him, his family and all who witnessed this awful event.
Very sad, and for the people who put pics and making jokes grow up it could be ur family or friends then what? Its not fun to see I have seen someone before jump in front of the train ling time ago nothing good to see. Have respect for the family people.
Call it mean spirited, call it callous, but it is real. People who deal with this on a daily basis can’t afford the emotional weight of feeling sorry for every person they see dead, or dying. You won’t find this happening when we see dead kids, innocent families that are the victims of someone else’s stupidity, or other real tragedies. Yes, someone died, but it was a self inflicted death, that was wholly preventable with an ounce of common sense.
He committed suicide. Yes, it’s unfortunate that he felt such a need, but don’t victimize others when you decide to take your own life. He forced someone else to be the means of his death, and to watch it happen. Many who see this type of thing are traumatized for life…or the make black humor out of it. It’s a survival mechanism.

May God forgive those that feel it’s kind to make light of a bad situation. May God Bless the family that has lost their loved one. We don’t know what each other go through when we pass a person day to day so stop and give a smile or even a warm hello make someones day and possible give a gentle hug so maybe another young soul won’t be gone so soon.
Very sad
In Illinois I lived near the Union Pacific/Metra West Line for over 40 years. Every year on average 2 or 3 people are killed by the Trains on the West Line alone.I moved to Newhall CA two years ago and this is the first time anything like this has happened since I’ve been here.No matter how many times things like this happen I never get used to it.Shame on you ones who make light of this sad situation.
The world is a dark place when people have no regard for a human life. IGNORANT. That is someone’s son, father, brother, uncle…Prayers for the driver and the family of the deceased.
Very sad news!
Right down the street from our house. My heart goes out to everyone involved….the distraught man, his family and friends, the train engineer, passengers, witnesses. Truly a tragedy.
Sad, but the train has the Right Of Way on the tracks. But, since UPRR owns the ROW, even the Amtrack and Metrolink trains have to pull over on a sidetrack sometimes for UPRR Freight. But the real sad fact is that Jaywalking in general has become very prevalent on all of our busy traffic corridors. The “Pedestrian Right-Of-Way” mentality can prove fatal when common sense is ignored.
Bryan Steve Agapito your too young too young to either view or comment. Get off it or don’t comment.
Right in front of my shop. Never know what was in his head. Life is very hard on everyone. However, thats not a way to end it. Its better to think two times about ending it. RIP.
