The College of the Canyons music department returns with renditions of popular music from the stage and screen — mixed in with some rock-n-roll and horn band tunes — during its annual POPS! Jazz Concert.
The event serves as the conclusion to the Studio Jazz Ensemble’s spring season, and will showcase the college’s award-winning COC big band, as well as its Lab Band combos under the direction of COC music director KC Manji.
Included in the concert itinerary are hits from several pop icons including Stevie Wonder, the Commodores and Michael Jackson.
Those with an affinity for superhero folklore will surely enjoy a rendition of the theme from “Spider-Man” as well.
“This annual concert is a popular event because of the literature we perform,” said Manji.“Our audience is always supportive of what we play, but they also enjoy hearing some of their favorite tunes from the radio, stage and screen.
“This is a fun show for the band also,” added Manji, “because the same memories it provides the audience, it also invokes in us.”
The college’s POPS! Jazz Concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 29, on the main stage of the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center (PAC).
General admission tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for COC students and senior citizens.
