LA MIRADA, Calif. — It just seems like the only way The Master’s College men’s soccer team scores these days goes through Humphrey Mahowa and Zach Klindworth.

One look at the past couple of games would provide solid evidence with the offensive combo combining to score six of the team’s last seven goals.  They were at it again Tuesday evening in La Mirada, teaming up for an early goal.

However, even the dynamic duo needed a little bit of help and they got it from Joey Mikulas (Monument, CO) who found the net on a free kick with less than 10 minutes to play to lift the Mustangs past Biola 2-1.

The huge road victory, the club’s sixth in its last eight matches, vaulted the Mustangs into a tie for second place in the GSAC with Westmont.  After starting the season 0-4, the Mustangs are now 6-5-1 overall and 3-1-1 (10 points) in the conference.

Mikulas’ third goal of the season came after an Eagle foul set up the junior midfielder for what Coach Jim Rickard described as “a tremendous free kick strike” from the top of the box.  Mikulas put the ball past Eagle goalie JT Addington for the deciding score with 9:30 left to play.

Mustang goalie Kyle Cunningham made sure that one-goal margin was enough, making a save on a Stephen Tanquary shot at the 82:54 mark to preserve the victory.

Earlier in the second stanza (55:36), Cunningham had surrendered the tying goal to Biola’s Marshall Deogracia who one-timed a shot past the Mustang keeper into the corner of the net.  In the process of notching his fourth win of the campaign, Cunningham made six saves, three in each half.

That goal tied a match which the Mustangs had led since the 21st minute (20:52) when, you guessed it, Mahowa and Klindworth struck first. Playing a quick game of give-and-go, Mahowa, breaking free from a couple of Eagle defenders took a return pass from Klindworth and one-timed it past Addington and into the upper-left corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.

It was Mahowa’s team-high ninth goal of the season while Klindworth picked up his team-best seventh assist.

After playing with what Rickard called “heart and passion”, the Mustangs will need more of that Saturday as they welcome first-place Hope International (5-0 GSAC, 9-2-1 overall) to Reese Field for a mid-season showdown.  Kick-off is slated for 1:30pm.
