Announcing the 2015 Empowering HeArts Honorees
I am excited to share the 2015 Empowering HeArts Honorees whose lives personify this year’s theme, Perseverance. Six women were chosen whose lives personify perseverance and triumph over challenging circumstances.
For the first time, all the honorees are or were single parents, and this fact was pivotal in their perseverance story.
Empowering HeArts is an annual celebration of women who have changed lives and shaped our community. Empowering HeArts bridges the worlds of social action and artistic expression in an annual arts competition.
This year’s distinguished honorees are (pictured left to right above) Tracy Hauser, Abi Caruthers, Melanie Cross, Kristin Drucker, Alesia Humphries, and Cynthia Smith.

And for the first time, the Board of Directors and the Events Committee chose six female artists who will create works of art based on our honorees’ perseverance stories. They are (picture left, from left to right) Jennifer Calderon, Chloe deJong, Falon Renteria, Kirby Lanier, Norma Warden and Cecily Willis (not pictured).
Read about them here…
We have two exceptional writers to tell our honorees’ stories. They are Catherine Morris and Kirsten Quinn, and Stuart Frolick will serve as editor. All the stories and art will be featured in the keepsake Tribute Program which will be distributed at the Gala on November 7, 2015. Single Parent Spotlight
Note: We recently received this letter addressed to SMO single parents from a parent who could not attend the Make a Mother’s Day event where she was to be honored. We thought it so poignant, we wanted to share it with our community…
You have no idea how courageous you are right this minute. By simply sitting in this room, amongst women who have been where you are now takes more courage than you know. To be present in the space you are in right now and to be able to know enough to know you need to be here is absolutely monumental. You need to take a minute, look around and breathe. It may not be ok now. You may feel out of place. You may feel embarrassed, scared or nervous. It’s normal. It wears off. I promise.
This is not an easy walk. It just isn’t. Only another single parent really understands where your head is right now. Take comfort in that because SMO is filled with people who are in the same place you are now. For today, you have to be honest about where you are at this moment. This is a conversation you have to have with yourself, first. Ask yourself what do you need first. Read more…
Miriam Robles To Dance For Single Mothers Outreach
We are excited to announce Single Mothers Outreach’s 2015 Dancing With Our Stars dancer: Miriam Robles. She has already been working hard to raise money for SMO. She has an ambitious goal to raise $20,000 and she needs all our friends to help her reach her goal!
About Miriam
She was born and raised in Mexico and has spent half her life here. She and her husband of 21 years are raising three children in Valencia. Her passions include any community program that improves life for all of us but especially for children who she sees as the core of our society and our future. So she and her family have become diligent fundraisers over the years.
This is a woman with a CAN-DO attitude which is why she is such a great fit at Single Mothers Outreach. Her goal, like the mission of our non-profit, is to empower women to overcome even the most monumental obstacles life puts in front of us. She believes in the importance of passing these values on to our offspring.
Help Miriam Reach Her Goal

“After 36 years of working for the California Association of Realtors and one year of retirement, I decided I needed to do something meaningful and beneficial for the community. I was a single mom of two girls and now have a beautiful granddaughter. I am so proud of my two daughters who are strong independent women who also support and give back to the community.I have been volunteering at Single Mothers Outreach (SMO) for about three years and have met so many people through this experience that have enriched my life. I work two days a week at the SMO office as a receptionist, and I love interacting with a variety of mothers and other professionals. Read more… |
