DaAnne’s Musings
On Saturday May 2nd, we celebrated our annual Make a Mother’s Day event where we celebrate “Mother’s Day” with the hard-working inspiring women in our program.
My deep and sincere thanks go to Taylor Ellingsworth, Martha Aguilera, Sheril Porter, Rhonda Coleman and my beloved staff, Darlene and Carolyn for all the hard work they put into the event. You guys are ROCK STARS.
So how did it go? The event could not have turned out any better.
The room was beautifully decorated with Rhonda Coleman’s (Rooms and Blooms) beautiful flower arrangements and Pinot’s Palette’s donated artwork, which was set all around the room. The staff we hired from Real Life Church to set up and tear down (and clean) went WAY above and beyond what we paid them.
The event began with Roseanne Limeres’ beautiful music – the stage was set like a night club and she sang beautiful songs to our women. They loved it!
Diana’s Fun Time Captured photo booth was a BIG hit with the moms and their children!
Then there were the male servers. They plated our moms food and served it to them restaurant-style. The best part was they heard our parents’ heartfelt stories of struggle, empowerment, and gratitude to SMO, and they were deeply touched. I loved that SMO directors Jeffrey Shapiro and Brett Walter escorted our honorees up and down the stage stairs when they received their awards.
Many commented on the tasty food from Hidden Havana, and what can I say about Martha’s Kokolita cupcakes, except that I’m really bummed I didn’t get one!
Martha gave the most moving inspiring talk to our moms and told them what they needed to hear…they are not defined by their past, but they are responsible for creating their future. Love her. Love her message.
Everyone got flowers and girly things and had a wonderful time, but the best part for me was our honorees’ testimonies.
They shared of moving beyond the pain and depression to creating a new life for themselves. One spoke of how Lynda.com has helped her create a new future so she can move past her disabilities. Another shared (and demonstrated) her metamorphosis from a cocoon to a butterfly because of SMO. Another shared her plan to help us start an outreach to teen moms because her daughter is a teen mom. Many shared that they received love, not judgment, and it made all the difference.
But probably the message I heard most clearly was their siren call to the sisterhood to move past the false notion that they have to do it alone or they are a failure as a single parent. They exhorted their sisters to accept the help that SMO offers because it will help them be the best parent they can be. I loved that!
Looking Forward,
DaAnne
Single Parent Spotlight
“Kelly” was raised in a lovely Central California beach community in a loving home by parents who expected her to become a responsible and independent grown woman. She felt in control of her destiny and was poised to raise her own children with these values. She had many plans and dreams for her family. But as many people have experienced, one day you feel in control of your life’s path, and then things change so that any control you thought you had slowly erodes. Sadly, the man she loved who was once her rock succumbed to a growing addiction to his prescription medications, and this changed the entire dynamic of their family.
Her childhood and early adulthood experiences had never prepared her for this kind of chaos. She was not even sure exactly what domestic violence was until it gradually escalated from verbal abuse and insults, to hair-trigger temper tantrums and eventually into bruises and injuries to her. Numerous incidents occurred, and the Sheriff’s officers recommended that she seek a restraining order, which she researched and obtained. Then, she became aware of the Domestic Violence Center in Santa Clarita. They provided her with more information about legal matters and also provided a court advocate to accompany her to court proceedings. Next came the stress of financial instability and worries over rent, food and other necessities. A friend of hers told her about Single Mothers Outreach (SMO). She learned about their services of therapy, counseling and help with school supplies for the kids. Her family was adopted at Christmas so that they had a tree and some very nice gifts for the kids. There were also donations of food courtesy of Whole Foods and referral to other resources to help with other essential expenses and education. She is especially grateful to SMO for the opportunity to attend FPU (Financial Peace University, designed by New York Times best-selling author and radio host Dave Ramsey, America’s trusted voice on money), where she learned how to budget, beat debt, and build a legacy.
She received the right amount of support and non-judgmental encouragement to help her heal herself and concentrate on making life safe and sane for the kids. She thinks SMO is awesome because their mission matches her goals. They aim at getting families back to independent living. SMO helped to restore her confidence in her ability to be a responsible parent with realistic hopes and dreams for her family. She is still registered to receive services from SMO as she works her way through the GAIN program. GAIN (Greater Avenues for Independence) is a Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services program that provides employment-related services to CalWORKs participants to help them find employment, stay employed, and move on to higher paying jobs, which will ultimately lead to self-sufficiency and independence. Kelly was also a recipient of the 2015 Live Your Dream Award (formerly the Women’s Opportunity Awards) offered by Soroptimist International. This award assists women who provide the primary source of financial support for their families by giving them the resources they need to improve their education, skills and employment prospects. Live Your Dream Awards recipients may use the cash award to offset any costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education, such as books, childcare, tuition and transportation.
Kelly plans to obtain a degree in social work and to eventually help others thrive. At this time of her life, she is emphasizing education. She is dedicating herself to working hard as a student and a single mom to set a great example for her kids about being able to accomplish your dreams through hard work and perseverance. That’s why the support she has received is such a blessing to her and her family. |

If you have been to the Closet recently, then you know things have changed. If you have not, there are some very good reasons you should stop by:
- On March 16, 2015, we celebrated the Grand Opening of the Men’s section. We have a separate room filled with men’s clothing including suits, dress shirts, casual pants, shorts and casual shirts as well as ties, shoes and belts.
- Spring has sprung with very warm weather early this year. As a result, we have seen a large number of donations as people start their spring cleaning chores and organize their closets at home. We have recently had several sale price days as low as half-off to make room for our newest donations. Everyday prices are already low. You can bring donations of your gently-used clothing any time we are open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day except Sunday. We provide receipts for your taxes.
- Some retail stores often donate clothing with their original tags.
- We have an entire room of evening clothes including gowns, shawls and accessories. We also have some high-end designer pieces generously donated. Whether you wear a model’s size or a plus size, we have a nice selection.
- We have private dressing rooms, and you can get help putting together a special outfit. Members of the staff have professional experience dressing customers for charity events, televised award shows, weddings, proms and career wear.
- Depending on the day, you may find premium designer items featuring leather, fur, hand-sewn crystal beading, feather boas, and real cowboy boots.
- It’s guilt-free shopping because all of the proceeds from the Closet go to the non-profit Single Mothers Outreach. Our registered Single Moms can shop the closet for free one day a month for themselves and their kids.
- Via Tucci occupies a small space within the Closet. It’s a retail boutique owned by Laurie Auger that features new clothes with a comfy casual boho look so that you feel good while looking great. Laurie is also a volunteer at the Closet.
- Our volunteer staff is friendly and helpful.
- We serve hot and cold refreshments and would love to meet you.

April was an exciting month for our Programs and Services Director, Maria Clemens, and her husband, Josh, who welcomed their first child into the world! Sofia Grace was born on April 8th weighing 7 pounds, 1 ounce. We are thrilled for Maria and Josh, but we are sure missing Maria here at the office! During Maria’s absence, our wonderful second-year MSW intern, Digna Yepez, will be overseeing case management and client services. Our new volunteer, Melissa Pallasch, will help coordinate our classes and events. Our other MSW interns, Marisol Solano and Michelle Novoa, are finishing up their time with us. Our clients appreciated all the support and encouragement they received from Marisol and Michelle. We are sad to see them go but wish them continued success as they pursue their degrees. We look forward to welcoming four new Masters in Social Work interns in September. We are excited to offer a new class for our Financial Peace University (FPU) graduates. Smart Money Smart Kids is based on the NY Times #1 Best Seller, Smart Money Smart Kids by Dave Ramsey and his daughter, Rachel Cruze. With six entertaining video lessons and age-appropriate activities (customized for ages 3-5, 6-13 and 14-College), this class will equip parents to teach their kids how to avoid making mistakes with money, while learning key principles of money management such as working, spending, saving, giving, avoiding debt and practicing contentment. The class will begin in May. |

If you visit the Closet on Main, you are likely to see the human that the Energizer Bunny was modeled after –Maria Hicks in action. Action is the key word here. We tease that if you look up the word “multi-tasker” in the dictionary, we think you should see a picture of Maria smiling back at you.
You might see her simultaneously answering the phone, attaching price tags to donations, translating English to Spanish and vice versa, pointing customers to the right place to find something and helping a new volunteer get accustomed to the chores. On the occasional days Maria isn’t at the Closet, she delights in spending time with her family and especially her grandkids. Customers will ask for her when they come in. Maria says the Closet is “a blessed place where visitors can feel at peace and where we all support each other.” She can sense when someone needs some extra attention or just someone to listen. People will open up to her. She believes that stopping to share a conversation with people at a painful time in their lives helps them pass through their painful stage and move on to a better place.Margo Hudson and her loyal aides were instrumental in bringing the Closet to its current status – a unique showplace for gently-used donated clothing and accessories with all proceeds benefiting Single Mothers Outreach. Maria was hired by Margo to work at her boutique over 30 years ago. Margo shares, “I knew the moment I met Maria, when she answered an ad and came in for an interview, that I had just met a classy woman with impeccable manners.” Margo says she came to understand over the years that Maria is a warm, generous and hard-working person with very high standards. To quote Margo: “Maria is indispensable to the Closet and an angel sent to me.” Maria is an original volunteer – at the Closet on Main for over two years since it opened. |
