No. 13 College of the Canyons dropped its first game of the season to Santa Barbara City College on Tuesday, as the Vaqueros scored three runs in the seventh to down the Cougars 7-4 at Whitten Field.

Canyons (5-1) had won five straight games out of the gate but was forced to play from behind all day vs. Santa Barbara. COC tied the game at 2-2, 3-3 and 4-4 before letting things slip away in the final frame.

SBCC (5-1) tagged COC starter Alexis Ramirez for two runs in the top of the fourth before going on to score single runs in the third and fifth innings.

The Cougars manufactured a pair of runs in the first, highlighted by an RBI sacrifice fly by Micayla Aguilar that scored Danielle Chatman. Chatman and freshman Melanie Abzun both finished the day with two hits to lead COC.

With Ramirez struggling to find her control, COC head coach John Wissmath called on sophomore Sarah Wilson in relief.

Wilson entered the game in the top of third trailing 3-2 and promptly pitched out of a bases loaded jam. In the bottom of the fourth Wilson then made her mark at the plate with an RBI single that scored Sienna Vannoy and tied the game at 3-3.

In the sixth inning it was Vannoy’s turn to drive home a run, as her sac-fly scored Chatman to tie the game once more at 4-4.

Wilson (2-1) eventually took the loss, despite pitching five strong innings of relief, after the Vaqueros exploded for three runs on four hits in the seventh.

Canyons was retired in order to end the game, and snap its winning streak.

COC returns to action at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, for a matchup with Southwestern College.
