Update Thursday 9 p.m., USFS:

There were several smokes observed in the interior of the burn area. There was isolated open flame spotted in the heavier fuels, on North aspects and in the drainages; however these were well inside the containment lines.

Additional road closures were relaxed today. The following roads remain closed: Lake Hughes Road at Dry Gulch and Sawmill Mountain Road at Lake Hughes Road. The following roads are open to residents only: Munz Ranch Road at Lancaster Road, San Francisquito Canyon Road at Dry Gulch, Elizabeth Lake Road at San Francisquito Canyon Road, 110th Street West at Avenue K, 205th Street West at Lancaster Road, Pine Canyon Road at Three Points, Dry Gulch Road at San Francisquito Canyon Road.

Firefighters will continue to patrol and cool hot spots 300 feet in from the perimeter and around structures, and will improve and construct line as conditions allow.

Crews used infrared (IR) coordinates and maps locate and extinguish hot spots within 300 feet of the containment lines. The incident was downsized by approximately 400 personnel today. The demobilization of excess resources will continue, commensurate with the incident needs. Fire suppression repair is being performed.

Update: Fundraiser June 15

A pot-luck dinner with live music will be held Saturday, June 15, beginning at 4 p.m., at the Leona Valley Community Center to raise money for Powerhouse Fire victims. In addition to money, donations of clothing and shoes are also needed.

The Powerhouse Fire, which started a week ago in San Francisquito Canyon, has blackened 30,274 acres and is 78 percent contained, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

CAL FIRE reports that 24 homes and 29 outbuildings have been destroyed. Five or six homes burned down Saturday night in Lake Hughes, primarily along Newview Road. The increase reflects the reassessment of damaged homes that were subsequently determined to be total losses.

Most roads that were previously closed have reopened to residents only. (Spunky Canyon Road is open to all.) Ridge Route Road remains closed at Lake Hughes Road, and Pine Canyon Road remains closed from Three Points to Lake Hughes, as firefighters work to hold flare-ups within the containment zone.

Wednesday’s efforts focused on Sawtooth Mountain near the campground on Lake Hughes Road south of town, and at a second location near the point of origin above the LADWP’s Power House 1 in San Francisquito Canyon, 11.5 miles north of Santa Clarita city limits.

Two firefighters were transported to nearby hospitals Wednesday for heat exposure. Three other firefighters sustained minor injuries Saturday when the fire devastated Lake Hughes.

The American Red Cross has delivered bottled water to the historic Rock Inn in Lake Hughes for distribution to the lake communities. (The Rock Inn reopened Sunday at 4 p.m.) County public health officials advise Hughes and Elizabeth Lake residents to drink bottled water or boil their drinking water because the fire may have damaged water storage tanks and distribution systems, and because power outages may have reduced water pressure to a point where bacteria can grow.

A quickly organized Wednesday night fundraiser at Butler’s Coffee in Palmdale netted nearly $1,100 for fire victims. More fundraisers will be announced.

The Hughes-Elizabeth Lakes Woman’s Club is accepting monetary donations for fire relief. Checks should be made out to the club, with “Powerhouse Fire” in the memo field, and sent to P.O. Box 84, Lake Hughes, CA 93532.
