College of the Canyons golfer Kristin Grimes had the lead in the first round of the California Community College Athletic Association Women’s Golf State Championship, but dropped to fourth place in the second round.

She was 10-over in the two-day championship at Temecula Creek Inn Resort. She won the state championship last year and was the Southern California Regional champion this year.

Grimes and Irvine Valley College’s Kate Cho were tied with 3-over 75s after the first round of the state championship.

Grimes was 7-over on the second day. Taylor Crandall from Palomar College won the state championship with a 6-over 148 in the two-round tournament.

Grimes earned a spot on the all-state team with her fourth place finish.

In college soccer, the College of the Canyons women are the No. 2 seed in the Southern Regional playoffs and have a bye in the first round.

The Lady Cougars are unbeaten at 17-0-4 and the champions of the Western State Conference South Division. COC plays the winner of the play-in game between East L.A. College and Long Beach City College on Saturday.

In track and field, Santa Clarita’s Allyson Felix won the Jesse Owens Award for the fourth time in her career.

The Jesse Owens Award recognizes the top track and field athlete in the United States. She won three gold medals, including the 200 meters for the first time in her career, at the Summer Games in London.

In college basketball, The Master’s College men lost their first game of the season, 75-65, to Cal Poly Pomona.

Derrick Fain led the Mustangs with 25 points and four 3-pointers off the bench.

In the NBA, the Lakers lost to the San Antonio Spurs, 84-82, their first setback since firing coach Mike Brown.

Kobe Bryant scored 28 points and had eight assists, but the Lakers committed 17 turnovers. Next up is the Phoenix Suns on Friday night.
