The Valencia softball team beat Canyon, 7-6, in home-run derby style.
Kristina Brackpool hit a grand slam in the first inning to give Valencia a 4-0 lead.
But Canyon hit four home runs, including two solo shots by Julianna Carlos, to keep the game close.
Nicole Joseph and Dominique Salgado hit back-to-back home runs to give the Vikings a 7-4 lead in the fifth inning.
Canyon’s Paige Johnson hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning to cut the Valencia lead to one. But Valencia starter Sydney Mundell got Carlos to pop up to first base to end the game.
The West Ranch softball team beat Saugus, 4-2, and captured its second Foothill League championship in a row.
Mollie Sorenson and Keeley Walsh each drove in two runs for West Ranch. The Wildcats remain undefeated in Foothill League play at 8-0 and have a three-game lead over Valencia with two games left to play.
The Hart softball team beat Golden Valley, 8-2. The Indians scored six runs in the fourth inning to break open the game. Jenae Coleman was 3-for-3 and drove in three runs for Hart.
The Santa Clarita Christian softball team beat Buckley, 13-2. Aubrey Robinson was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and scored a run.
In high school swimming, the Hart boys won their 17th Foothill League championship in a row and broke the league record in the 400-yard freestyle relay at the Santa Clarita Aquatics Center.
Hart beat Valencia, 475 ½-457. The meet was decided on the final event. The Hart boys won the 400 freestyle relay in 3 minutes, 10.13 seconds.
The Hart girls won their ninth Foothill League championship in a row, 549-449, over Valencia.
In hockey, the Kings lost to the St. Louis Blues, 2-1, and are down, two games to none, in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs.
Barrett Jackson scored the game-winner with 50.4 seconds left in the third period.
Game 3 is at Staples Center on Saturday night.
In baseball, the Dodgers are in San Francisco to start a weekend series against the Giants. Clayton Kershaw starts for the Dodgers against Barry Zito for the Giants.
