[KHTS] – Hundreds of runners from all around the Santa Clarita Valley and beyond gave it their all at the 2014 Santa Clarita Marathon Sunday.
The Marathon, Half Marathon and 5K races began at 7 a.m. with the Mayor’s Walk at 7:05 a.m. and the Kid K Fun Run at 8:30 a.m.
The winners for the Marathon and Half Marathon begancompleting the races a couple hours into the event.
“I’ve been running competitively for about four years now. This is my fifth marathon total,” said Marathon Women’s Division winner and 29-year-old Venice resident, Shannon Landers. “I go crazy if I don’t have something to do so it’s good to pass the time and keep myself busy. I ran Boston this past April for my second time. This is my first Santa Clarita (race).
“I liked it, there were a lot of twists and turns, a lot of hills so there were surprises. It was beautiful though, no traffic and staying off the roads — it was awesome.”
Landers, who was accompanied by her training partner and boyfriend, completed the 26.2-mile race in 3 hours, 21 minutes and 57 seconds.
Many families attended the event as well, participating in the various races and supporting each other.
“We ran the Marathon Relay and it was fun,” said Canyon Country resident Rodney Thompson who ran the race with his son Hunter Thompson. “This was our first time participating in the race.”
“I run cross country at La Mesa Junior High and we have big runs on the weekends,” Hunter Thompson added. “We’ve been practicing for this race.”
The Santa Clarita Marathon has been held annually for nearly 20 years and is a Boston Marathon qualifier.
