The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors will consider naming a new director of the Natural History Museum system Tuesday.
The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County includes the William S. Hart Museum in Newhall, the Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits, and the Natural History Museum at Exposition Park in Los Angeles.
The candidate is Dr. Lori Bettison-Varga, president of Scripps College in Claremont, a position she has held for six years. She was previously provost and dean at Whitman College from 2007 to 2009 and was director of the Keck Geology Consortium from 2004 to 2007.
Bettison-Varga holds a bachelor’s degree in geology from UC Santa Barbara and a master’s in geology from UC Davis.
She was recommended for the position by the museum’s board of governors.
She will succeed Dr. Jane G. Pisano, whose planned retirement was announced in September 2014. Pisano led the museum system since 2001.
If approved, Bettison-Varga’s starting salary will be $158,898.
The on-site staff positions at William S. Hart Park and Museum remain unchanged. Margi Bertram is the museum administrator; Norm Phillips is the park superintendent.
