[KHTS] – Six Flags Magic Mountain’s Fright Fest has been declared the best theme park Halloween event in the country by USA Today, and it will continue to be open this weekend.

“It is such an honor to be recognized by our guests and fans for the efforts we have made these past five years to make Fright Fest the biggest, the best, and the scariest Halloween event in Southern California,” said Park President Bonnie Weber.

The park’s operational hours have not been affected by the recent I-5 closures and Magic Mountain will remain open until 1:00 a.m. Friday night.

Fright Fest beat out other frontrunners in the viewer poll such as the Fright Dome in Las Vegas, Nevada and Six Flags Great Adventure’s Fright Fest in Jackson, New Jersey.

Park Spokeswoman Sue Carpenter believes that new attractions have increased the scare-factor in the park.

“We make changes based on guest feedback,” Carpenter said. “We’ve gotten a lot of feedback already and guests are really enjoying it this year.”

The Fright Fest was expanded this season with a new Scare Zone, expanding the total in the park to seven areas where “Scare-Actors” interact with guests and frighten them.

The new zone is the largest Scare Zone the park has ever done, and surrounds the new Twisted Colossus ride with a steampunk themed “Screampunk” area.

Magic Mountain has also redesigned the DC Universe section of the park for Fright Fest, adding lights and wall projections that pulse to music, making it harder for guests to see the actors walking in the area until they are ready to give a scare.

“We had that scare zone,” said Carpenter, “and we upped the terror.”

Other additions to the Halloween lineup include the “Shadow of Evil: The Ride” which is a madeover and frightening take on the Apocalypse roller coaster presented by upcoming video game Call Of Duty: Black Ops 3.

Another thrill is X2 Satan’s Domain. Many of the major roller coaster’s lift lights are turned off during Fright Fest to enhance the fear.

The other attractions added for this year’s Fright Fest include a new “Unleashed” stage show and a “Dining with the Dead” meal experience.

“The response this year has been extremely positive,” said Carpenter.
