A fourth suspect has been arrested in connection with the Jan. 8 attack that left a Newhall liquor store clerk with a gaping knife wound to his arm.

Det. Dan Finn of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station said detectives were able to identify Pedro Bernabe, 19, of Newhall, as the one suspect who got away on the night of the attack. Bernabe walked into the Sheriff’s Station Jan. 12 and surrendered, Finn said.

Three other suspects were apprehended moments after the Sunday night incident – Oscar Jimenez, 19, Eduardo Salgado, 18, and a 17-year-old male, all of Newhall.

Finn said all three adults were confirmed as members of a local gang that operates primarily in the Newhall and Valencia area. The juvenile was identified as a gang associate, he said.

The attack occurred about an hour after the group reportedly stole beer from Dooly’s Liquor and Market at Railroad Avenue and14th Street, immediately next door to the SCVTV Media Center. The men returned at 9:35 p.m. and reportedly demanded Dooly’s surveillance tape, which ostensibly would have shown them stealing the beer.

They didn’t get the tape. Instead the clerk and the men engaged in a fight that left the clerk with a slashed arm.

The clerk told SCVNews.com his stitches were removed Wednesday and his arm still hurts.

For whatever reason, the case drew national and even international attention when the Associated Press picked up the story. The AP version, which misspelled Dooly’s, could be read on at least one financial website in the Middle East.

Finn said the four alleged assailants face a host of charges ranging from assault with a deadly weapon to burglary and victim intimidation, with a gang enhancement.

Bail amounts are $180,000 for Jimenez, $240,000 for Salgado and $285,000 for Bernabe. Jimenez and Salgado are awaiting their next court date at the North County Correctional Facility in Castaic, while Bernabe is in Men’s Central Jail.

Salgado was placed on an immigration hold, indicating he might be in the country illegally.

The three adult suspects are scheduled for a preliminary hearing next week.
